I am thinking of starting a Cichlid tank. I have read that to keep a good solid high ph in your tank to use rocks like limestone. Is this true ?? if so are there any other rocks that do this ?. Or is it just limestone. Or are there any other good ways to keep a high solid PH ?

P.S this would be for e.yellows and e.blues

a lot of african cichlid keepers use crushed coral as a substrate. you can usually buy this in bags at the lfs just like gravel and it should help mainain a high ph for the africans.

I don't keep africans personally, so you'll get more/better advice from those that do.

I use a natuarl substrate for my peacocks, my ph out of my tap is 7.8 so I'm lucky there. I have read on another site(can't remember the site) that use strictly crush coral can irritate the gills. Also becareful of using to much limestone rocks, they can leach metals such as copper. Maybe some of the other people or moderators can verify this.

No Limestone!!! Use crushed coral or put some seashells in the tank. In order to keep your pH high, you need to increase your carbonate hardness. Shells are calcium carbonate, and will dissolve in soft water, adding carbonate to the water. Your pH will be easier to increase after raising your kH

I've always used baking soda to raise the pH in my african tank. I have trouble believing that relying on rocks/crushed coral etc is safe. It must surely take a while for it to seep into the water, especially fresh water added to a tank. You would have pH swings all over the place upsetting your fish.

Before you criticize someone walk a mile in their shoes. That way you're a mile away and you have their shoes.
