I think that discus are okay when kept without other discus, but I'm not 100% sure. Some clarification would be best.

Personally, I feel that one discus should have at least a 40 gallon tank to live in. That way they have plenty of room, and it is easier to keep the water quality up when compared with, say, a 29 gallon.

If you are starting with small discus, say 2.5 inch fish without tails in the length. You can use a tank that provides about 5 gallons per fish. As the fish grow and become adults, you will need about 10 gallons per fish.

Discus are social, schooling fish. I recommend a minimum of 5 fish or any number above that as long as it is an odd number. That is, 5, 7, 9, 11 or more. It reduces the typical cichlid behavior that the fish will demonstrate.

Since you are buying young fish, I would recommend that you go "bare bottom", that is no gravel until the fish have taken on some size. If you raise your fish in a planted aquaria they will grow just not as well.

Small fish should be fed a varied diet up to 5 times a day. Feed them until they no longer beg or hunt for food. A little food at a time is better than a lot. It will help to maintain good quality water in your aquarium.

Bottom line is a minimum of 5 fish at 5 gallons is 25 gallons but I would stretch myself into 36 or a 55 gallon and add two more at the 55 gallon size. Remember that not all your fish will grow up or you may want to cull them so...

the qz u should ask is what is the biggest tank that you can get..

but to answer your qz, to get started on small discus(say 5), even a standard 2 foot tank (about 60 litres) will work, it all depends on how much water change u doing
