i have a set of stripped angels and throughout the course of a normal day one of them will change shades of color(get lighter and darker)and it seems as the one gets darker they tend to be more aggressive ...im trying to find out if its a mating signal or if it is just one oddball angel????

it doesn't sound like a mating ritual, but an aggression thing.

just my 2 cents, but often the more aggressive or dominate fish will force the other into submission, and thats why the color change,

but who knows, thats just my guess.

I also don't think it's a mating signal, but i don't know why they do it.

Just because you have two angels, even if those angels are male and female, does not mean they will breed. They may not like each other or one may not be up to the other's standards of angelic ideal health and beauty. Who knows what angelfish find attractive in a mate...

The best way to get a pair is to buy several (at least 4 or more) and wait for them to pair off, then return the other to your LFS or to soemone else who wants them and can care for them properly.

Hoping that there must be a word for everything I mean...

I have one striped angel in my 55g and she changes color also. She has no one to mate with so I don't think its a mating ritual. I think it may be a stress issue or maybe just her personality, maybe. If you startle her by moving towards the tank too fast, she will lighten up. Sometimes her stripes are really dark though.

Like illustrae said, angels pair off before they breed. You can't force them.

They're still a bit small to be pairing... when their bodies are about 2 inches across, then they're closer to breeding size and you will notice them starting to get a bit aggressive and territorial.

Out of curiosity, how large is your tank that you have 8 angels in it? When they start staking out territories, a tank smaller than 4 ft. long might start feeling a little cramped to them.

That sounds good for that many angels, YOu are pretty much garanteed to end up with at least one pair in a couple of months. When you move them to the larger tank, use lots of plants and tall driftwood to help break up territories.

You have to wait for them to pair off before they'll even think about breeding. You have a few months before that will happen. Good water parameters are very clean slightly acidic water, and temps around 80F. They might be induced to spawn after a large water change, or by conditioning with live foods such as brine shrimp, blackworms, bloodworms, etc.

They are probably just fattening up. I noticed something similar in my one surviving angel as he finally started putting on weight and going through growth spurts. Like an opaque oval-shaped area in the lower abdomen...
