Not mine, but I figured you'd all appreacieat them...they're from the National Aquarium in Baltimore...I would have shot more but the family was getting a bit on the "let's go" side of things...

about the stripes: one thing you guys missed is that it may differ from one strain of fish to another. For example, Heckel discus (my favorite) have stripes when content and lose them when stressed (like angels). However Discus such as Marlboro, Red Tourquise, et cetera, are without stripes when contempt and with them when stressed.

I have noticed this in discus and the closely related angelfish (also, not too many people know how closely related they are!!!! fyi). My wild and wild colored/zebra angelfish have stripes when happy, and don't when scarred, but my golden angels do not have stripes, but do when stressed. So the thing is not if they have stripes when happy or sad , but what strain they are.

Thanks trace, I did the trial basis, will get full "premie" this week. I got the "turk" online, they were advertised as "royal blue" which is a misnomer, as they were asian bred. But they are beautiful. Now I just need a bigger tank!

I love my ram!

Hi Jack,

nice healthy looking Discus. Your pigeon wont show the stripes, but your turk will.

I love Blue rams especially in full colour. Welcome to the "premie" side of FP by the way.

Got to agree with Trace-Russ with the stripes being a good primary indicator of stress. Discus use the stripes as signals as well though, my red turk pair for instance, the female shows the last three stripes when she is ready to lay eggs, as soon as I see those I know she'll place eggs within 12hrs.
With the younger discus showing the stripes more, I think its maybe something to do with camouflage, blending into roots etc?
With the wild strains, gotta agree that they are nice, breeder in my area had some Tefe's delivered last month, all I could do to stop myself drooling.
Cheers

Kenny

Me2...It makes them even more beautifull... But I really, really doubt it's due to stress

With my discus, it seems that the stripes are more visible in certain lighting and less in other. Wild discus have the stripes all the time and attempts have been made (successfully) to breed the stripes out and obtain a solid colored fish. Personally, I like the stripes as they add character to the fish.

OMG! I thought it was the other way around!!

They show 'em when they cruise around, and when something scary happens, when my sis smack the door ect. They take the stripes away!

whaa!!!!!

EDIT: My angelfish did that aswell!

Those stripes you are refering to are stress bars, that show up when the Discus are not happy or prob in your case the new enviromnent.

Younger discus tend to show the bars a lot more than older Discus. Why I dont know maybe someone can tell us???

To clarify on the stripes issue.

The reason both angelfish and discus, and other cichlids show stripes is essentially for camouflage. These fish are found in habitats rich in plants like vallis so the vertical stripes allow them to blend in very well with the background. Their bodyshape is also very suitable for swiming amoung the long leaves of these plants.
Many people say that they only show up when the fish are stressed. This is not quite true. Certainly the gene that promotes the stripes is activated at times of stress, and ill health, but they are also activated when the fish is gravid or if a predator is around or if the lighting is too intense etc.
The reason the stripes are being bred out of the discus commercially is that there is no selection in the tank for the genetically fittest. In the wild the fish with the strongest stripes would be genetically "fitter" as this is advantagous to there survival and so they also tend to live longer, thus keeping a large gene pool of strong stripes. In the commercial breeding of discus however, the fish are kept in bare tanks with no such sort of vegetation so the dicus cannot distinguish between the fittest fish. The stripes and the gene are present in every fish, it's just the ones that dont show have a very weak gene for this adaption.

Hi Trace,

Looking at all these beautiful pictures makes me very sad and envious.
I now have only the one discus and he is (I think) a pigeon blood. I had a red turquoise and a neon blue. Oh well, maybe once I know it's safe to add discus to the tank again, I will.

I would send picture, however, I'm not sure how to do it. I will try and see if I can figure it out tomorrow and send picture of all the fish in the tank.

ive managed to get a few pics of my tank and one of the discus, they are both camera shy. The one not pictured always darts away whenever i get close and the only pics i have got he is all dark and horrible. These pics were also taken before i realised i had a mineral deficiency in my tank so some of the plants look a bit raggid.
Is this discus a Red Turq? i have been unable to find another picture that will identify him. Thanks for looking! (sorry the pics are of poor quality)

about the stripes: one thing you guys missed is that it may differ from one strain of fish to another.
