You should use a water conditioner with tapwater. Many places now use chloramine which does not evaporate like chlorine. It has to be broken down and neutralized by a water conditioner. Just aging it is not sufficient anymore.

i wouldn't use rain water, you never know what polutants you may get, specialy if its run off.but i wouldn't think you need to age it though.they say let tapwater sit for 24hrs or more, then should be safe.its alot easier then catching rain aswell.asfar as conditioners for water,i never use any.the water in my area is good to go strait from the tap.good luck.hope this helps you.

There was recently a short TV article on the dangers of collecting rain water for drinking especially in built up areas and the polutants coming off the roof.
Even if you collected it in a set up that had no contact with any roofs at all there would still be a lot of polutants in the air and you would have to start collecting after it had been raining steady for at least 30+minutes to be on the safe side. If it is not safe for human consumption it is certainly no good for any fish.

As for storing in plastic water cotnainers I have been doing this for more years than I would like to remember.
I store 60Lt every week for my two tanks. I use a dechlorinator and keep the top off for one week. I heat each container in the laundry trough befor I add it to the tank. I have never used a temp gauge to see if it is the same temp (finger test)it is usually a little bit warmer but it never alters the tank temp.

well you da man keith, and thanx 2 the others aswell, ill scrap the rainwater and just stick with ageing tapwater, does this sound ok,once my tapwater is aged i add my buffer, then i put my spare 300watt heater in the drum to get it to my tank temp.then i add it to my tank via a hose,in front of my power head,

I tried heating up the water containers with a tank heater and kept blowing them. I think the reason was I was not leaving it in the container long enough before I turned it on, then taking out a hot heater.
As I now use 15lt containers I pour them into a bucket first to lighten the lift then I pour the remainder directly from the container.

With the Betta tank I use a watering can with the spray head removed. Might sound a bit silly but both methods work very well for me and that is the most important thing, quick and easy.
