I just got a discus and my ram started attacking it. You can see my discus in the photo booth.

How big is the tank? How big is the ram? How big is the discus? Is the ram doing any damage to the discus, or is it just charging and flaring?

Angel,

You are seeing typical cichlid behavior from the ram. It has been in the tank longer, it feels it has ownership and the discus is bugging it.

Bumping the number od discus from one to five will knock down on some of the ram's aggressiveness as the discus will stop trying to bond with the ram and join in butting heads with other discus. Sounds strange but that is what happens.

I think you also have some angels in this tank. Watch out for their aggression toward the new guy!

The tank is 55gallons the discus is 1 to 2 inches and the same for the ram. Amazingly my angels dont harm the discus. Even when they werre spawning the chased all of the other fish away and let the discus into their territory. I am getting the discus a friend in about 3 days

This is indeed normal cichlid behavior. All I can offer is a lil input.

When I fist put that large angel in my tank that you saw. My rams also picked on him. They immediately started picking at his bag wile it was floating.

Then after a day or so they started nipping the tips if his veil tale. I even saw a little blood. I added some Melafix to the tank for his tale, and it healed right up.

Everything settled down after a few days. Now they don't even recognize that he is there.

Just keep an eye on him and make sure the Discus is eating. It is eating right?

Calm down how? His eating behavior? What does he do that makes you think he needs to calm down?

Angel,

Small discus are like little pigs or babies. All they want to do is eat and, well, increase your bioload... If he's hungry, he's healthy. Discus that size should have 4 or 5 small meals per day. Your other fish are going to love having him in the tank.

By the way, what is your water temp?
