Well I have a 55 gallon tank that I just set up to rear some koi angels. I have it planted, probably 2 parts tap water to 1 part rain water. I had it set up so that I was comfortable putting the angels in yesterday, and the guy I got the angels from also breeds rams so I wanted a pair to throw in there also cause from what I've seen of Rams they look nice (after getting them I found out just how beautiful they are). So I have 9 quarter size angels (almost half dollar size) and 3 rams (2 females and 1 male) that I put in yesterday night. A large amount to put in at one time but I have some mature filter fiber in my filter and am putting in stability for a week to make sure all is well. I have this piece of driftwood in there that a chunk has seemed to be broken off of so it makes kind of a flat, semi pointed surface at the top (the piece is angled in the tank so it makes a flat kind of indented surface). I noticed that a pair of the rams were really scoping out that part of the driftwood yesterday and today, picking at it and sitting on it like lions on a hill or something, and I suspected they might be cleaning the spot for a spawn, but then dismissed that as I thought they normally spawn in a cave structure (clay pot or pvc) and not out in the open like that (which after reading and seeing tonight I found I was wrong), plus I just introduced them yesterday. Low and behold after I turn off the main light tonight and just have one flourescent on, I go off to do a paper, I come back and look at the tank and what do I see on the driftwood but rows and rows of eggs!!! My rams spawned, and I just put them in the tank yesterday! I guess the conditions are right for them (yay!). Luckily I have vinegar eels, microworms, and daphnia for any fry that pop up in 3 days (plus after they hatch I'll start brewing up some bbs). I had planned on setting them up their own tank later to get them to spawn. I didn't imagine they would spawn in the tank with the angels the day after I put them in. This is awesome! I hope they guard the fry well enough that in a few weeks I'll have a bunch of free swimming babies I can move out to their own tank. If not, I'm sure they'll spawn again, after all, they seem pretty comforatable . Yay, ram spawn!

Congratulations for your Rams, but make sure that the Angels will leave them alone.

The rams should guard the eggs and be able to fend of the angelfish. It will take 2 to 4 days for the eggs to hatch and become wigglers. If the rams do a good job of guarding the spawn, add some java moss near the site to provide a hiding spot for the fry.

You may also want to start a brine shrimp hatchery or find a lfs with newly hatched brine shrimp...

Have my own hatchery . I think if I have to worry about anything it would be the angels as the rams are close to the angels in size right now and they are the protective parents. I'm just worried that the fry might get eaten up in that tank. I do have java moss, but the driftwood spot the chose isn't in the bottom of the tank, it's about mid tank range. I wish I had a digital cam to give pics. Anywho, I'll try to provide cover and hopefully in a few weeks I'll be able to move several of them to their own tank. We'll see.
