will a sand substrate sand be ok with a pair of convicts?Also,is there any otherer medium sized CA cichlid o can keep with the pair.How many tigerbarbs should i keep with them/This is a 55 gallon BTW

There are some major problems as many sand users have stated previously.
The fine particles can easly get into the impellar and cut it to pieces.

It compresses very quickly giving little airation to the substrate.

Algae/dirt problems on the surface.
If you have plants it is not suitable for most roots as it
compresses the roots and there is no airation for them.

If you wish to use it that is totally up to you but I would look into it a lot more before you use it as a substrate.

i have used sand in many of my tanks and have it in one now and i really like and have never had any problems with it. i have kept african cichlids and angel fish in it. it is a little harder to clean but i don't see anything wrong with it, just don't stur it up a lot.

I have sand in my Elec.Yellow Labs. tank & they breed without any problems.
