the Discus is getting quiet these days....

well just normal float and add water trick will do, that's what I have been doing to all my Discus and nothing goes wrong...it usually takes me 1 hr or so for the whole process. Finish off with a ph check, if it's ok then net the fish out and discard the bag water.

You might want to put more in your title next time... Give people an idea of the question... I don't click threads i don't think I know the answer to...

To answer your question... I must first disclaim that I do not own discus, but I do own an assortment of rather sensitive fish and I can only give you the info I've gathered from acclimating them.

I drip all of my fish. The amount of time I let them drip is determined by the difference in pH and temperature from the bag to the aquarium. With discus these factors should be matched to the best of your ability before hand. Temperature should match exactly and the pH should be no more then 0.2 off any more and you could have some stress related deaths. Start your fish to drip with a thermometer in the aquarium and in the bucket, let them drip for 3 hours at least. As soon as the pH and the temperature match, gently net them with a soft mesh net (not the evil green ones) into the aquarium. Turn the room and tank lights off for 24 hours and do not feed them during this time.

For more information about dripping...

Acclimate discus by:
- Placing the fish and its bag water into a clean bucket,
- slowly add tank water to the bucket,
- use Ammo Lock according to the directions on the label to convert potential ammonia to ammonium as you add add tank water

I subscribe to the grab and toss method of moving the fish from the bucket to the tank. With this method your either net or gently catch the fish in your hands to place them in your aquarium. I use this method as I am unsure of the potential pathogens in anyone else's water.

i like the sound of the drip method but does the bag the fish come in contain enough water in it to put in a bucket or do you add some tank water off the bat.

Chris,

I am not trying to be a wise guy but the amount of water depends on the bag and the size of your fish. When I received four adults from Enchanted Discus, the water in the four bags was enough to fill about half of a five gallon bucket.

However, I have seen bags pierced in shipment that had little water but still had live fish. If you are picking up the fish, I might bring a five gallon bucket and AmmoLock. Be sure to only fill the bucket about halfway and use a towel over the top of the bucket to prevent suicide jumpers while you drive.
