It also sounds like you are overfeeding. Is your water cloudy. My guess is you probably have Ammonia and Nitrite in the water. I don't think you need to feed so much twice a day lightly and everyother day frozen food.

What kind of "Africans" do you have? The reason I ask for specifics, is that in Africa there is a wide range of different cichlids that require a wide range of water parameters (ph levels from 6-9) as well as a wide range of types of foods (from meaty to mostly plants). Also, there is a wide range of aggression (from timid to some of the most aggressive cichlids). Any one of these could be the cause. However, with your tank being so new, I feel your problem is going to lie within the cycle not being completed. In other words, I feel it is probably going to be the ammonia spiking. How long after the tank was set up did you add all those fish?

AFricans as in mixed assorted cichlids?? If so, dont feed them brine shrimp, and instead, introduce a spirulina based food or other vege matter. They should nibble on some leafy green, such as lettuce.

You should own an ammonia test kit, just in case. Also, are you feeding vegetable based foods?

55 Gallon tank. a do weekly water changes w/ about 20 1-1.5 inchers. this might be overstocking. the tank has been up for roughly over a month.

BUT as i was walink out the door this morning i noted that my air pump wasn't giving sufficient air, Thus not aerating the water= fish loss? it was buried in coral so i uncovered it and theres a lot more bubbles. going to get the test kit for nitrite then

In a fully cycled tank there should never be any ammonia or nitrIte readings. NitrAte will be present, I personally dont like it to get higher than 10ppm. The only way to get rid of Nitrate is through water changes. Post your water results and we will see what we can determine for you.

What is the tank size and full stock list?
How long has the tank been set up with fish?
What is your cleaning routine for the tank?
