i'm intereseted in buying some 2.5" discus, and i was just wondering how (or if) you can predict what colour they will be when they're older.

i have three other discus that were mostly orange when i bought them (at around 3" but they have since developed extensive irredescent markings.

i'm interested in getting some cobalt blues, and they all seem to be brown when young. do you just have to trust that they will colour up eventually?

any ort of answer would be great!

ask to see the parents or even futher down the line to get a good idea of what they will look like. i don't think there is any way to be positive of what an adult will look like.

Emily,

Good answer from Chris. I always try to purchase my discus from local hobbyists. It has a number of advantages.

Price is generally lower than your fish store.

Greater selection of fish.

Ability to see the parents and see what they might look like when they grow up.

Chance to talk to someone who is interested in fish keeping.

There are a number of very good breeders in Canada that may be near to your home.
