i have a 35G with three large discus (6" and 5 rummynose tetras that has been set up for about a year and a half. it's decorated with mopani wood and various plastic plants. i've had two of the discus since they were small (3" and "adopted" the other when he was slightly smaller than he is now.

a month or so ago i noticed two displaying what i thought may be courtship behaviour/pair formation. i would love to have them breed, but my tank is a display tank above all else. is it possible to have discus breed in a community setup without doing anything special? i could move the fry once they were "weaned" from their parents, but would prefer not to have a seperate breeding tank set up.

thanks!

I think that actually getting discus to spawn is really difficult, but if they did, you shouldn't have to do much other than provide the fry with food. Also, you shouldn't remove the discus fry from their parents, because they also feed from the slime coating on their parents.

My discus laid in a show tank. It was ok till they turned into free swimmers. Thats when your problems will start. You will probably find that your filter is too strong for them. Good luck anyway

if and when they spawn, i will definitely set up a nursery tank for the babies once they become freeswimming. sound like a plan?

hey, another question... the suspected pair contians one tangerine discus, and one brown discus... what do you think the babies will look like? some orange, some brown? a mixture of the two colours? something different?

thanks!

To be honest I would put them in a tank by themselfs before they spawn. Then when they become free swimmers they will be able to latch on to mum and dad more easily. Look at Trace's thread on breeding discus! you'll get all the advice and answers to your questions there. It's at the top of the page. Good luck. Keep us posted

That sounds overstocked, if you ask me.
