the male and female will sometimes fight a little when first introduced. they are just testing each other usually. However, if you notice excessive aggression and they are actually hurting each other i would separate them or replace one. Sometimes rams just wont pair up and need a new parter. Also, are you sure they are a male and female?

If they are a pair they could be just testing each other out.
The male might be a bit too agressive for the female.
Also are you sure they are a pair and not two males?

Male rams will sometimes chase the female if they want to breed and the female doesn't want to or isn't ready. Being chased all day doesn't help, of course, and the female would really use some spots where she can hide from the male and be out of his sight, especially in a small tank of 5 gallons. Planting your tank (if it's not already planted) will create some hiding spots where the female can hide from the male and rest a bit. It's better to plant thickly one corner of the tank than a plant here and there. Plastic plants will also be good if you don't want real plants.

And although rams are small fish, I think that 5 gallons is really too small for them as they need some space. a 10 gallon tank would be much better for them (and the other fish) and 20 gallon would even be better.

It's better to have some hiding places for the female to hide. It's not a good thing being chased all day. When the female is ready to breed, they will pair up & breed on a stone that has been cleaned.

BTW, 5 gal. is too small for Rams + the other fish.
