Before you criticize someone walk a mile in their shoes. That way you're a mile away and you have their shoes.

I would go with 3. Thats a pretty big tank. So 3 should do fine with regular water changes and heavy filtration.

Not just you pj. I think oscars need there space. There are exceptions but that is usally the result of oscars that have been raised up together imo if you are going to crowd something oscars isnt the best choice.

good luck

How small are the Rapheals around there? Usually they are at least 3 inches around here. Besides, they are well armored, and the other fish won't even attempt to eat them less they are very hungry. You could try, heavily feeding your oscars before placing them in the tank. Then turn the lights out, so the oscars will settle for the night, and this would give the catfish a chance to find a good hiding place as well.

It's probably just me.
IMO two would be a good number with some catfish.

I don't like the look of crowded tanks, well at least not with cichlids. Thats probably just me though.

it would be kinda hard to put the other catfish in ther now, just because arround here you cant get any big enough that wouldn't be considered food to the oscars. thats what they would think of them. but thanks for the insight any way.

As for the Oscars, I would have to say 4 in that tank would be ok, as long as you keep up on your water changes. Oscars do not need a lot of swimming room. So there is no real need for longer length of the tank. Your biological filtration should handle four of them OK. As well as the addition of a few Rapheal catfishes.

Have you seen a 120g 4ft tank. They're actually not as big as they sound.
IMO anything more than 2 full grown oscars in a 4ft 120 would really be pushing it.

i decided it would be cool to have 4 different oscars. will i have enough space for the four plus some extra cichlids? or is this a plan i should toss out?

3 Oscars... at 16 inches long... 48 inches... The aquarium is only 48 inches long.... If you put 3 in there they would occupy the entire width of the tank... making moving just a wee bit difficult.

Would be optimal for two O's, three would be pushing it.

Going with a SA/CA fish (oscars), I would stick with a SA/CA catfish. Try the striped Rapheals. You can put several in that tank, and they will do nicely, will not be bothered by the oscars at all. They get about 10 inches in the home aquarium. I have seen a couple at 12 inches though. They live long, I have one at 10 inches now, that is about 15+ years old.

I actually have a tank the same size, 4ft*2ft*2ft but i call it 115g because thats roughly how much it is excluding the glass thickness.

um, i don't know that much about catfish but i think a few syno... cats would be good.
Or some BN's would be another option.

I also say 2.

You said you wanted some extra cichlids for the tank. Instead i would get some catfish and leave it like that.

Your going to need very good filtration because they're very messy eaters.

What are the tank measurements?
because a 6ft would be alot better than a 4ft.
