While I have severe doubts that Wal-Mart is dealing in unusual Apistogramma species, your fish does bear at least a passing resemblance to a female Apistogramma juruensis "Nanay" ... the right hand photo of the two featured on this page.

It was the single central body spot and faint banding that foxed me, having originally toyed with the idea that it was whatever fish was labelled Apistogramma pertense in the old Innes book (its name is almost certainly something different now). I suspect your fish is NOT this rare Apisto, but so far I can't find anything else that even remotely resembles it ... the Apisto on that page has the eye stripe and the central body spot, and also possesses very dark first hard dorsal rays - which, your fish appears to as well, which is one of the features that led me to think 'Apisto' in the first place.

However, given that there are now 30-plus valid recognised Apistogramma species, plus a whole brace of undescribed ones and fishes with dubious trade names, and my search hasn't been exhaustive, chances are someone will find a commoner species that matches your little Cichlid. Whatever it it, it looks quite cute, and I just hope it doesn't turn out to be something big and bad tempered when it grows up!

That's one of the reasons I mention curviceps. I don't think Walmart is importing wild stock, so it's probably something fairly common that got in the wrong tank at the distributors.

Definitely not a curviceps. I have seen plenty of young ones- None had the eye stripe, and their coloration and patterning were different than this fish's. Honestly, I'm not sure what it is. Wal-Mart isn't known for a huge selection of fish, so I would guess that whatever it is would be somewhat common.

I'd guess something like a keyhole cichlid or Laetacara curviceps. The eye stripe isn't normal in an adult curviceps, but I'm not sure about a juvenile. The eye stripe is found in a lot of young fish. The shape looks curviceps to me.

Oh...er...nvm then

Well anyway he DOES look like an eartheater but you'll probably just have to keep an eye on him til he is a little bigger.

A good photo would certainly be a help to identify it for you.

Have a look in [link=My Profile]http://
