my questions is do you treat fish, besides the discus, with meds. before you put them in the discus tank. I am thinking of some congo's, pair of kribs and clown loaches, but should i treat them with any meds before putting them in a discus tank even if they show no signs of disease. i was also wondering if that would work for angel fish, if they can be treated so there is no way they will pass anything to the discus.

If they show no signs of disease, why would you want to treat them? Would you like to be prescribed medicine or given shots when you're healthy? Nah, the fish will be fine if you're positive that they aren't sick.

I keep an extra 10 gal tank going. If a fish gets sick I use it as a Hospital. If no one is sick I may put some newly purchased fish in it for a couple of weeks before adding them to one of my tanks to make sure they are healthy but I wouldnt medicate a new fish for no reason. Also if you are keeping a hospital/extra tank set up you allways have to have a fish in it or the cycle would break. I have a pair of red eye tetras that stay in my 10 gal. when no one is sick or new and be very carefull not to put fish in a tank that you medicated other fish in without proper preparation.

I would quartine the new fish for a month to make sure they have no diseases. Better to be safe than sorry.

I agree with the above,

Always quarentine before you put fish in with your discus, and never medicate unless there is a cause, As for Angels I dont think there is anything you can use to medicate them so they dont transfer a parasite to your discus. I could be wrong but this is my belief.

does that mean you dont treat the discus either, some of the books i have read suggest treating for multiple things while the fish are in their 3 week quartine.

oh, and by the way, people do get treated for things they dont have, it's called vacinatinons
