suggestions for tankmates for discus tank

currently 55g

6 discus (small/quarter size)
8 bandit cories

Should I just leave well enough alone and let the discus grow out or could I add something small like a school of cardinals - thanks

You can leave it as it is, as the Discus will out grow the 55Gal.

i'd let the discus grow out - at that size you don't want them to have to compete for food or be scared by other tankmates.

A good tank mate for Discus is Rummynose Tetras
You could put a nice school of 6-8 in with them.
I disagree with Discus being scared of other fish. Mine even fight the Rainbowfish for food.

Good advice from the Jasons. The discus that you have are very small. It is best for them to have as little competition for food as possible until they grow out to a 3 to 4 inch size. Fewer fish in the tank will also allow you to maintain great water conditions while their young immune systems are susceptible to any pathogen that is crawling around.

Note that I said great not good water conditions. NO ammonia or nitrites, keep your nitrates are low as possible with daily water changes. Be sure to vacuum your tank with every water change.

Start these fish on a varied diet of flake, tetrabits and frozen bloodworms. They should be fed 5 to 6 times a day in little meals. They should be accustomed to frozen brine shrimp, but their diet should include the above foods as brine shrimp have little nutritional value for their mass.

After they are semi-adults, that 3 or 4 inch size, add rummynose or cardinal tetras after a four to six week quarantine for the new fish.

My apologies, I didnt realize they were basically fry!
In that case I agree with Bob, I would wait for them to grow out to at least a 3 inch size before adding more tank mates. Young fish of any variety dont need competition, espescially shy fish like Discus.
