someone in a previous post balked at the fishload of my discus tank.

i've had it set up about a year and a half and the residents are 3 large discus (about 6" and 5 rummynose tetras.

the tank is 36"x12"x21" and is filtered by a fluval 204, with extra circulation provided by two small powerheads.

i do a 30% water change every week like clockwork

does this sound too full?
could i move the two gold rams i have in a nother tank in with the discus?

thanks

The tank size you gave comes in at just under 40 gal us, so I'd consider your tank pretty maxed out.
The general guide for the discus is 10 gal each plus 10gal spare, after the min tank size.
Personally I wouldn't add the rams even if I were to step up the water change schedule.
Sorry.

Cheers

I say you can try and watch your nitrate level...

if it's no good...
change/add a filter if u need to...or if u like rams better than rummy nose then trade the rummy nose in
or change twice a week with 20% each time....there are many ways to get around with over stocking...just depends on whether you want to do more work on it

my personal opinion is..those rules on some gallon on a fish is only a broad reference....it is not a rule, as everyone's setup might be different and the planned amount of time on maintaining is also different

I would say that your tank sounds pretty full right now. What I would add though, is one more rummynose tetra. They don't produce much waste, and tetras do best in schools of six or more.

Hi guys,

I've been reading an article from Jack Wattley as to how many adult fish per gallon and it went something like this..... "Number of fish per gallon depends on many factors which are filtration, quality of water and frequency of water changes.

Under ideal conditions in a 75 gallon seven to eight fish would be ideal, but the numbers could be greatly increased if the hobbist using quality water were to make much larger waterchanges of 75% daily and you could easily maintain 20 adult discus in the 75 gallon tank.

If the filtration was inadequate you could only maintain four discus in the same tank."

SCORCE: TFH MAG,JULY 2003.

So depending on how often and amount, you want to do your water changes and use what water, filtration ect., the numbers of fish you have in your tank is really up to you.

thanks for the advice! i'm really happy with how the tank is right now, and am kind of paranoid about adding anything (the rams are established in another tank of mine and are doing fine there as is) so as long as i'm not going to run into problems in the future (the discus are still growing, but more slowly now), i'm happy to leave it be.
