In tanks labelled assorted cichlids you have to watch out for hybrids...

at our local walmart they have stickers under all the tanks telling you what all the fish are. having said that the staff dont always know what you mean when you tell them you want a cirtin type of fish. i've never bought cichlids there but i did buy guppies there once upon a time, also my poor butterfly fish, and my corys who i must say have been wonderful. really, a petstore or fish store is abetter bet. start with the best you can get, it avoids the heart breaks.
ps
when i talked about the stickers, it was even for the assorted tanks, they have a pic. of the fish, the name and a price.

*EDIT* the ones they have in the 'african' tanks are almost completely random. you would be better off going to a pet store so you know what you get

From what I can tell, most likely the orange ones you see in there *at least around the md/va area* are either.

Pseudotropheus estherae - Red Zebra
or
Pseudotropheus zebra

what you should do is find a nice fish store in your area. there you can good information and a good stock of fish. the problem with big chain stores is that they usually do not take care of their fish properly and they do not offer a large selection.

the problem with buying from the assorted tank is that you never know what you get. cross breeds, hybrids, call it what you want but they are something you should stay away from.

Can you all please keep in mind that we do not allow comments that are negative about the practices in shops. These types of comments can lead to legal hot water for members and the site itself.

In the past there have been lawsuits against memberships of websites because of this type of topic and naming specific companies/brands. Fortunately this site has not been involved but we dont want to be in the position that it could happen.

Thank you

My Wal*Mart has the following species as of last week:

- Labidochromis caeruleus
- Dimidiochromis compressiceps
- Pseudotropheus zebra
- Pseudotropheus lombardi
- Pseudotropheus demasoni
- Pseudotropheus acei
- Melanochromis johanni
- Melanochromis auratus
- Nimbochromis venustus.

- Along with Orange Blossom peacocks.

I've also seen several other species there before.

word of caution; walmart will only get what they can buy for cheap. mostly overbred kenyi, yellow labs, red zebras, auratus, etc. in my opinion, these are not cichlids for the beginning cichlid keeper. except for maybe the red zebras & yellows. *EDIT* *EDIT*

Yellow with a black stripe on dorsal fin would be a electric yellow.

All yellow with eggspots usually is a zebra. In very rare occasions, I have seen leleupi in the assorted tanks.

I talked to a guy there about this same thing once. He informed me that they never know exactly what their getting until the supplier delivers. But from the looks of the tank it mostly like lemon yellows, auratus, venutus, and some other different varities Lake Malawis.

Yellow: probably Electric Yellows, Labidochromis caeruleus.
Blue: could be anything from Hap. ahli (the electric blue) to D. compressiceps to a million others, I'm afraid. LOTS of blue Malawis.

They're usually labelled ... do you mean in the "assorted cichlids" tanks? There's no telling ... mbuna, haps, hybrids ... mostly Malawis but all young and virtually unidentifiable, IME. You're MUCH safer with a known quantity from a store that specializes in fish. A jack of all trades is master of none, and all that.
