Hello, I have a 20g tank with 4 gold barbs and a few other fish. All the fish get along and there doesn't seem to be alot of stress. Now 3 of the barbs will swim around the tank as normal but I have noticed that the one gold barb just sits inside a cave all the time. I started with 2 gold barbs, 1 male 1 female and then added another male & female. Now this is one of the old ones and all it does now is sit hiding. I have had all the barbs in the tank for almost 2 months now and it has been doing this for almost that amount of time. When I first added the 2 new ones they all swam around together but a week or so after they were all in this one just started to hide. Now when I feed the fish it will come out eat what it wants then go back in. The other barbs will swim inside the cave with it and they don't scare it off but it will not come out with the others. It will also kinda peak it's head out every once in a while. I beleive it is a male Barb that is doing the hiding. Now the other male barb is much smaller then the one that hides. It doesn't seem sick or anything but I don't get why it is always hiding. Any ideas would be great. Thanks.

Just a note the cave also houses a Pepper Cory every once in a while.

The hiding Barb could just be a shy fish or id being bullied by the younger male. If posible I would return one of the males and get another female if this keeps up.

Hello, I never saw the other one bully it around. I always watch a tank closer when I add new fish and never saw this happen. The smaller male will even go into the cave with the other male and they don't do anything like fight or butt heads. I have noticed though that when I turn the light off it will come out and swim with the rest of the barbs. Don't know if this helps or makes any difference.

Hello again, I just wanted to let you know the the barb has decided that it wants to come out. I don't know what happened but I didn't do anything to the tank but add a couple fake plants but today it seems to be out and about a bit more. It still goes into the cave but only for a bit then it comes back out and swims around then goes in for a bit then back out. Not sure why it is doing this now but I am glad that it has decided that it wants to come out.

Very glad to see that you are observing your tank if you do this for a few minutes every feeding time it will always help to locate any problems and deal with them quickly.
