I live in western australia and have a large tank.1.6m*0.8*08 thats about a 1000 litres. The tank has a gravel bottom lots of limestone, bogwood and live plants.I have a cf1200 aqua filter plus 2 small in tank filters running.I do regular water changes.I have a large range of cichlids in the tank as well as clown roaches, bronze catfish, pictus catfish, bristlenoses and one large leopard pleco. The tank is i hope well established and have bred a lot of mainganos. Now to my strange problem.I had 2 large Red Fin Sharks about 100mm long. One disappeared about a month ago,no dead fish just a complete vanishing trick. The other Red Fin has being keeping to itself lately hiding behind the filter and heater. The other day it swam out into the middle of the tank and i could not believe the size of this fishes body. From the pectoral fin to the anal fin the poor thing looks like a cigar. Now is this fish pregnant or sick?At the moment i have put her in a smaller tank and she is living in a flower pot.No sign of illness, even though i have not seen her eat.Her colour is good and every thing looks fine apart from her swollen abodem. When im not in the room she comes out and moves about freely. My local pet store has no idea whats happening. Please any ideas on whats happening?.Rgards ark.

Are you refering to Red Tail Shark or the Rainbow which has paler red fins and tail?

I have had four red tail sharks including one very large one which ruled the tank but there was plenty of areas they could all call their own as they can get aggressive towards each other.
Also it is not recommended to have both types in the same tank unless they have plenty of space but the RTS will be the dominent one.

Hi,

I have 3 RTS...the biggest one is def the female...grey underbelly...the other 3 hide in caves & plant life

my 2 albino cats tell her who boss, the other 2 RTS hide...

I was told by my LFS that 4 RTS are fine...

I find that in a 30 g tank, that 1 is enough
my husband was the one who 4 all at once !

The big RTS (alpha) is huge!!!
and boss lady

Laura
PS, 1 RTS per tank!!!! I know !!

I have a 55g community tank and I've been waiting for a 6 months to find one of these to place in the tank. I'm waiting for my local fish store to receive a shipment of Red Tailed Black Sharks though.

It might be that the fish is not sick but merely a female. Doe the scales bulge giving the appearance of a pinecone?
