i've read that bala sharks can be kept with tetras but what about guppys?:%)

I think it should be fine. I read that they may eat one every once in a while but its only because they havent tried it before. I would be more concerned about the fry.

I have 6 med/small Balas an 4 feeder guppies(also have 2 fries)in my 55G. Even with the big difference of sizes they get along very well. I recommend you to try feeder guppies(they are cheap) and Females will give you fries.hope you have at least a 55 G.

I have some large BS recently I purchased some fish(cannot remember) there was a small fish under one inch in the bag. It kept hiding for a few days but when it came out one day too close the BS good by small fish.

I would only be concered with the fry as they would see it as food as many fish do.

I have balas in my 125 gal. with clown loaches and tiger barbs.The balas all pretty much shoal together and don't really pay the other fish much attention. So I think you'd probably be ok mixing them with guppies.
