Yes zebra danios are schooling fish. Considering that will reach somewhere between 1 and 1 3/4 inches you could relatively have somewhere between 6 (enough for a school) and 10. Depending of course on what else you have in the tank.

Danios get bigger than that. They are not the best schoolers, but they are very fun to watch zip around chasing each other.I would not put that many in a 10 gal though. They are very active and need swimming room.4 or 5 at the most if they are the only fish in the tank other than a few cories.

Zebra danios are technically shoaling fish- they’re really messy schoolers. They do need to be kept in groups though, with six or more fish being recommended.

Trouble is, ten gallons doesn’t provide much swimming space. Danios are super active; you can see this at any lfs. Considering their active, shoaling nature, and two inch eventual size, I don’t think that it’s wise to stick zebra danios in a ten gallon tank. It can be done for a period of time, sure, but adult danios just plain need more room.

If you're looking for a schooling fish something like harlequin rasboras might be a better choice.

well....i have to agree with sir books...danios r too much playful for a 10g tank...and eventually will outgrow that...get a smaller one...like the dwarf rasboras

The harlequins should work out fine with a small school of say 6 - 8.

I don't think any of the small rasboras are nippy.

Sounds like the start of a nice Asian biotope. If you could find them in your area or are willing to order online there are a few small (less than 1" ) rasboras available:

exclamation point (Boraras urophthalmoides)

pygmy rasbora (Boraras maculatus)

dwarf emerald green eye (Rasbora dorsiocellata)

The last two can be seen here; scroll about halfway down the page.

Then you could add a pair of cherry barbs or sparkling gouramis as a centerpiece

This is an exclamation point rasbora:

I've never heard of a barn nipping a betta, or otherwise causing problems.

If you were referring to the cherry barbs, then no. They will not bug a betta, because they're such peaceful little fish. They are ideal betta tankmates, in that they are reserved, colorful, and occupy the mid-bottom of a tank, in contrast to the top-hugging betta. I have kept cherry barbs with a betta before, with no problems whatsoever.

You could go with a mix of gold dainos and a mix of zebrass and that would be pretty.
