Hi people, I have a 10 gallon aquarium with a male swordtail and I would like to know what else I could put in there with him besides other females. Any ideas?

swords are alittle large and active for a ten gallon, if anything lower level stocking only. like 3 ottos, but no more.

I personally would remove the Swordtail he will get too big for that tank adventually also they like plenty of room as they are usualy an active fish.

My sugestions would be another M Betta with Cardinal Tetras and a few Ottos.

Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info

I also think that a 10 gal. tank is too small for a Swordtail. For sure don't add more fish & try to move him to a bigger tank.

I think I have one of the "dwarf" species of swordtail because he is only 2 3/4in. including his sword and I have had him for 2 years or so, so I think there was some confusion there.
Also, he is not very active, just lesurely(sp.?) swimming around...I have tried to add a male betta, but he started flaring at the sword so I took him out. Maybe a small school of tetras would be okay?

Actually, I have never heard of a dwarf swardtail. He is most likely a stunted fish if he has lived his life in a 10g. If you keep him in the 10g you could probubly do some ottos or mabey a small school of corys with him. Neons would overcrowd the tank. I think if you add anything it should be a bottom feeder.

I saw the dwarf swords on this thread:
http://www.fishprofiles.com/files/threads/15285.1.htm?3#
He might have been stunted, how big do male swords usually get? When I bought him it was my knoledge that they only got 3 inches or so.

chances are most lfs dont carry them,

i only say mountian swords in a lfs once, but nothing else really. take our advise for what you want, but all of us have told you pretty much the same thing, so keep that inmind.

but about stunted, i would have to agree as you can have a large fish in a small tank and it wont grow and you can say it is a dwarf but that generally isn't 100% right.

again you have a 20 gallon, why not move the sword in their, but again angels dont really belong in a 20 gallon, but that is a seperate issue.

I'll move the sword in with the angel, but don't worry, I am getting a 40/50 gallon that the angel will live in. Now I have an empty 10 gallon-I'll check previous posts for what to stock it with. Next time I go to my LFS I will check the max. legnth of swords. Thanks for all your help!

personally on vaction in mexico i did run across some wild mollies and wild swords, and the females where around 6 inches long, def the longest i have ever seen. while males are smaller, and generally comerical swords dont reach as long as wild swords.

most common answer is 3-5 inches, but dont forget the sword needs alot of room to reach full size, and also swords are active fish and can jump so a larger tank is required.

Were you refering to an Xiphophorus multilineatus? Yes those are dwarf swords but the artical said that you wont find them in pet stores very often.
Swordtail maximum length is 5 in. ^_^
