I'm having a hard time trying to decide on what kind of cichlid I want to put in my 33 gallon. I know I'm limited, but Im hoping to have a breeding pair of what ever I go with. But not Convicts, been there done that lol.

Well, theres kribs, but that might be too agressive if you want a community, and theres the peaceful rams, and also you could make it an african cichlid tank? Do you want a community? Im sure others would have better suggestions, but heres a good starter i guess!

Good luck

I think firemouths do better with a full 48" long tank...but that's just my opinion.

Bolivian rams would do well in there, and so would keyholes, A. thomasi (African butterfly cichlids), Neolamprologus cichlis (brichardi, leleupi), the Tanganyikan shell dwellers (N. brevis, multifasciatus, ocellatus, caudopunctatus), Julidochromis, etc.

Could somebody please enlighten me while the 'krib' has such a bad reputation on this site while many hobbyists keep this fish without difficulties in a comunity tank?

Catdancer - a single krib is a well mannered inhabitant of a community tank, but a pair of kribs can be as nasty, when spawning, as a pair of convicts (just a bit smaller, so less damage).

I've kept kribs in a 33 gallon, 36" long tank with no problems...but their other inhabitants were an african butterfly fish and 6 congo tetras - no other lower level fish other than the kribs were in the tank.

Any animal that provides protective care to it's young will be defensive towards others if offspring is around. Nevertheless, kribs are recommended as community cichlids in the literature, even as pairs, the idea being to stock the tank according to the water zones the inhabitants live in. Something that should be taken into consideration in any community set up. You did the right thing with your set up and I am assuming that Fish Guy would do the same thing.

On a totall different note Happy New Year to All
