Depending on the cost of the tank, quality of the filters, how much deco, and where you get it all from I would say about 400 to 500 dollars.

Nah, not that much. I've seen at a nearby chain store a 55 gallon with hood and light for around $90-$100, the decor is up to you, and the price of a stand varies. I would say around $200-$250 if you found a good deal like the one I mentioned.

that depends on how you want to set up the tank - i recently bought a 55g - the tank was on sale for $100 (canadian). i bought landscaping gravel from home depot for $5, a used fluval filter for $40 and for the lid just picked up some of the plastic used in office buildings to cover flourescent light fixtures ($5). it's strong enough that it stayes up, but light enough that you can cut it with scissors. home depot had some flourescent lights for $10 each, and i used cinder blocks and a piece of plywood to make a stand. and honestly the cinder blocks don't look bad at all! all together i managed to get it set up with a little more than $200

It would be impossible for any one to even think of costing what you have asked for.

There are many package deals made by dealers. It would be possibly safe to say that these deals are put together with most of the lower priced items.

On the other hand if you want to make a first class start and select only the best quality bare essentals I am sure the cost woukd be several times of the package deals.

Then start thinking about the type of fish as this will depend the Aquscaping you do.

Fake or real plants, rocks, all the chemicals required, food a good variety, ongoing maintainance etc.

I think if you sit down and think it through it will cost a lot more than the bare minium offered in the package deals.

In comparison computers, a cheap no brand name with all the free goodies that come with it or a well known and trusted brand with all quality parts and good programs. I know which computer I would buy.

It is exactly the same with a total Aquaruium setup cost equals quality.

I hope this helps you to make a well informed decision. Think twice and act once.

So sirbrooks out of curiosity your saying that without filters or decoration it would cost $350 right? I guess I wasn't that far off... I don't mean to go off on a tangent here but I see this happen all the time. Members post something with advice and then it gets nullified by another member who turns around and says the same thing. I think as a group we need to be more conscientios of what we are posting and pay attention to the advice we are giving.

Hmmm? I said that without filters and decorations, a 55 gallon could be as cheap as $90. That is, if it was part of a package deal with the hood/light. Nowhere did I say that anything cost $350. "I would say around $200-$250 if you found a good deal like the one I mentioned." That is, $200-$250 for everything.

You should check the classified section of your local paper. Sometimes you can get really good deals on tanks and equipment through the classifieds. If you have a pet store in your area that sells used tanks you could also check with them. It never hurts to shop around.

I think that we paid $155 for my 55 gallon starter kit at PetSmart. The stand was another $100. I've spent countless hundreds on decorations/accessories/fish for it.

I'm sorry. I simply implied that everything for a 55 meant everything to make it a functional 55 gallon tank. This includes the basics like gravel, a heater, and a filter. Not including plants, driftwood, and/or additional rock decoration, the total would run probably around $300. Then add the additional stuff above that most people include in their tanks to decorate it to their own and their fish's liking, the total would probably run over $400.....IE: $400 to $500 dollars, depending on your own preferences.

I must have read into the initial post, even though it clearly stated a tank with gravel, and a heater, etc.

I won't talk to you about the price of the 55 gallon. I'll just recommend you to get a tank with better dimensions. The fact it's only about a foot wide can be restricting compared to other tanks of larger and smaller volumes.

looking in the classifides is a great idea, you may very well find a comple set up for a good price. I just bought my gf's mom a 30 gal tank w/ everything needed for $60.00 out of the penny saver witch is a weekly paper devoted to people selling things.
