I had the good fortune to attend the American Cichlid Association Convention in Chicago this month. It was a one day trip from my home in Kalamazoo to Chicago and back due to family and business commitments.

It was great to meet people who I had met on-line or with whom I had spoken on the telephone. It was an oppurtunity to rub elbows with Heiko Bleher, Ad Konings, Wayne Leibel and Ray "Kingfish" Lucas. Oh, I almost forgot the fish!

Pick a cichlid, any cichlid and you probably saw it on display. Discus that were 8 inches in diameter and an inch and a half thick (Kelvin Chiang). A blue ram that was the size of a Bolivian ram. Decorative tilapia that might have been able to stand in for dinner....

Check out the judging! ACA 2006

Most of those fishes were absolute jaw droppers.

Didn't surprise me in the least though when that Red Top aulonocara was Best In Show (and yes, I ploughed through the slideshow in order!). That is one utterly incandescent fish. Bet it was GLORIOUS to see in real life.

Plus, when you see Discus the size of dinner plates, you KNOW whoever has entered them has put in a massive amount of effort.

How many entrants were there Bob? And were you among them or just a spectator?

Thanks for posting the link, Bob. A lot of very nice looking fish and other info. I've always wanted to attend some of the national conventions of the different organizations, however they always seem to be located much to far from me to warrant the cost and the time needed to go.
