Any ideas for a good algae eater that will clean the algae off my anubias plants?Ottos do not live long, the ones around here for sale are from poor stock.I have a bn pleco that is small, but they seem to clean glass better than plants. It's a 75gal.tank with 2 clown loaches,2 zebra loaches,3 featherfin cats,1 rainbow shark and 6 bloodfin tetras, plus 1 small bn pleco.Anyone try sailfin mollys? There is no salt in the water because of the loaches.Any thoughts out there?

Well IME I have found CAE alright for cleaning my plants, butI might be just lucky. I have also had good luck with algae eating shrimp on my plants.

The CAE is probably a bad idea for your tank as they get near a foot long and very agressive.

Most mollys dont need salt in the water anymore as they have been bred without salt for so many generations.

Rainbows may not get along with any fish shaped like them, when I had 2 they fought with each other, the flying fox and the SAE, I don't know how they would get along with a CAE either.

I had a CAE once, in a 10g. I didn't know much about fish obviously. But it did get about 4 inches and then started sucking on the sides of the danios I had. I never saw it, but it left a circular wound on 2 of my danios and both died. I wouldn't get a CAE. FishGuy may be lucky, but most people won't be. If they don't kill your fish by sucking off their slime coat, they do get aggressive with age.

I think it depends on what type of algae you have, to determine what type of algae eater to get. I would try to find the type of algae and what causes it. You may be able to fix the problem and not have to buy another algae eater. SAE's are good for some types of algae. Find out what type it is first before deciding on a fish.

The kind of algae that is on my anubias is bearded algae. The leaves get coated with it.I have 3 SAG in a planted tank loaded with anubias and most of the older leaves have some on them. They work the glass and feed on hair algae that comes and goes. The only fish that I found the would clean the leaves are the ottos, but the ones around here are not very longed lived.I might try some again, but with a 75gal., might need 4 or 5.Also thinking of one more bn.
