Water + light = Algae.

Not much you can do to keep it from growing on your glass top unless you can eliminate the water forming or splashing on to the glass. Hard to accomplish considering the evaporation that then forms as condensation on it. Just have to clean it off once a week or so.

I think it's easier to scape it off the glass, than adding some thing in the water to remove Algae. I would keep on removing it weekly, it's not that hard.

I've got a brightly lit planted tank and on the front/sides/back, my algae is pretty well under control. On the inside of the glass top cover, however, I have a major algae problem. I've got to scrape that glass off at least once a week because algae is obscuring the light. Water params are all norm - 0,0,5-10.

Any idea how to keep algae off of there?

You could try lowering the water level, although I dont think it looks as nice as having the level as high as possible.

I had exactly the same problem with my 5ft tank glass tops. It was mainly occuring when I was using a plant fert several times a week. Now I only fert once per week and I dont have the problem like it used to be. I still have to clean the glass regually. I clean the glass using a glass cleaning pad which I bought from a supper market. I do this under a running hot water tap.

My water level is about 3/4ins below the glass.

I take mine to the tub and soak both sides with vinegar and then wipe them paper towel and they come out like brand new.

coffeeman,

I agree with the other, Jim sums it up nicely: water + light = algae

If the tank is planted then you need ferts in it (and if it is not then you will still have some, no matter what you do, simply from your fish). Splash water will reach the glass and algae will form in these optimum conditions.

If you had a little less light then it would be easy to wipe it off with a paper towel on a weekly base. But with more light the water evaporates quickly from the glass (heat) and the algea gets baked onto the glass.

I don't know if you have your light sitting directly on the glass. If so then you could try to lift it up a little (some models have optional legs that can be installed) and the glass shouldn't get that hot anymore - alas making your cleaning job much easier.

Hope this helps,

Ingo

you might be able to go longer than a week if you kill it completly everytime, use vinegar like openwater said and you should extend the time between cleanings

Good luck

Joe
