Algae on the top glass | |
OldTimer Mega Fish USAF Retired Posts: 1181 Kudos: 1294 Votes: 809 Registered: 08-Feb-2005 | Water + light = Algae. Not much you can do to keep it from growing on your glass top unless you can eliminate the water forming or splashing on to the glass. Hard to accomplish considering the evaporation that then forms as condensation on it. Just have to clean it off once a week or so. Jim |

I would keep on removing it weekly, it's not that hard. http://uk.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/s8xi5heh/my_photos http://www.geocities.com/s8xi5heh/classic_blue.html http://groups.yahoo.com/group/buzaqq/ http://www.deathbydyeing.org/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/corydoras/ Member of the Malta Aquarist Society - 1970. http://www.maltaaquarist.com |

On the inside of the glass top cover, however, I have a major algae problem. I've got to scrape that glass off at least once a week because algae is obscuring the light. Water params are all norm - 0,0,5-10. Any idea how to keep algae off of there? |

It was mainly occuring when I was using a plant fert several times a week. Now I only fert once per week and I dont have the problem like it used to be. I still have to clean the glass regually. I clean the glass using a glass cleaning pad which I bought from a supper market. I do this under a running hot water tap. My water level is about 3/4ins below the glass. LITTLE_FISH ***** Little Fish ***** Master of Something Posts: 7303 Kudos: 1997 Votes: 670 Registered: 20-May-2005 | coffeeman, I agree with the other, Jim sums it up nicely: water + light = algae If the tank is planted then you need ferts in it (and if it is not then you will still have some, no matter what you do, simply from your fish). Splash water will reach the glass and algae will form in these optimum conditions. If you had a little less light then it would be easy to wipe it off with a paper towel on a weekly ba I don't know if you have your light sitting directly on the glass. If so then you could try to lift it up a little (some models have optional legs that can be installed) and the glass shouldn't get that hot anymore - alas making your cleaning job much easier. Hope this helps, Ingo |
