So at the weekend my boyfriend utters those words every girl wants to hear ..."I think we should set up the old tank and be a two tank family". Brilliant! We get to the LFS to buy some hardy fish to get the cycle going but he has set his heart on angels. The LFS says that angels should be ok, they are quite tough. So we've bought 2 and so far they seem quite happy in the 10g. So my question is, are Angels tough enough to get through the cycle? Also will 2 fish be enough to get it going or should we buy a couple more?

thanks

I personally wouldnt recommend using Angels to cycle a tank. Most likely when the ammonia spikes, they will both die. I would take them back and cycle your tank with Zebra Danios or White Cloud Mountain Minnows.
Angels, espescially smaller ones, are notorious for dying when water conditions degrade.
They are definetly not "tough enough" to cycle a tank, sorry.

OH and also, Angelfish are MUCH too large to live in a 10 gallon tank. You need a tank of at least 25 gallons that is at least 18 inches tall in order to keep angels to maturity. In a 10g tank they will stunt and die.

Not only are they totally unsuitable to cycle the tank. They are too big a species for that tank.

Finally either take them back or locate another LFS that will be more helpful and honest with you.

If you tell us your general location there could be some in your area that could point you to a reliable LFS

I have 2 Angels which I bought when I first set my tank up along with 2 mollies and 2 platys. All are fit as fiddles!

I must admit one of the angels did get quite lethargic for about 2 days.

All might not be lost!

I usually set up my new tanks with goldfish. They are very hardy fish and I can always return them to my LFS after the cycling

Thanks for your imput guys - I did wonder if that would be the case. My LFS does have a 10g display with some angels although I think they started with four and now there's only 1 left. I've broken the news to my partner - he's currently in denial !( but we can move the Angels to my 24g.

Keith, I'm in Sydney on the northern beaches and my LFS is in Manly. It's a great store with lots of variety but I've found their advice a bit lacking. I'll ask my questions here first.

Thanks for your help. :

I am a bit south of you 75klm south of Melbourne on the coast.

Some one in you area will help you.
