![]() | Barley Straw to eliminate Algae? |
El Tiburon Tailandes![]() Hobbyist Posts: 132 Kudos: 54 Votes: 0 Registered: 10-Jan-2007 ![]() ![]() | Hey there, seasons greetings from Costa Rica. I was wondering if any of you have any experience ridding your pond/tank of algae with barley straw? I have read about this on several sites and bought a bag of it which I still havent placed in my backyard pond which is about 1000 gallons. Though i havent read about it being used in a tank (not pond), youd have to figure it would work as well. Just wondering if anyone has tried this, if its worked, if its not recommended, etc..... Thanks ![]() ![]() |

Here is an interesting site you might want to read: http://ohioline.osu.edu/a-fact/0012.html There are others, but this is the most factual and scientific. As far as using it in a closed system (aquarium) is concerned, I would not attempt it. In reading the link above, I would be hard pressed to figure out exactly how much to put in, say a 30G tank. This is not a algacide, it prevents new growth and as the existing old growth dies off, no more is formed. PS... With your pond and your interests, you may want to look at the other fact sheets that are associated with this one. Frank ![]() -->>> The Confidence of Amateurs, is the Envy of Professionals <<<-- |
