Hey all,

Me and my wife set up our tank in the basement, and I was wondering if the fact that the tank gets no direct sunlight is a problem? Heat is not a factor as the room it is in is finished off and is warm enough but there is minimal sunlight getting through to the basement. Will this harm my fish? Will it harm the aquarium plants I have planted? Should I get a special Light for the tank cover?

I have a 55 gallon freshwater stocked currently with

Harlequin Rasboras
Zebra Danios
Common Pleco
Black Widow Tetra
Another Tetra
Fancy Guppies

Direct sunlight isn't needed, and mostly unwanted.

I don't think a special light would be needed, just have a normal daytime light (for the daytime) and a purple tinge light for the evening/later afternoon.

You should be fine...my dad had a 55g built into our basement wall for many years without problems. A lot of people use their basements or a portion of them for fish rooms.

It depends what you mean by a 'special light'. Your plants definitely need light in order to grow, so there does need to be a light shining into the tank, not just the room light. Also the light for the tank needs to be bright enough and of the right spectrum for the plants.

Check out the planted tank forum on this site for more information on what lighting is best for your situation.

Have you ever seen direct sunlight in good Aquariums?

There is no effect at all by not having any direct sunlight.

i think a little direct sunlight is ok, but a lot of direct sunlight is bad for sure.

a friend of mine has a 15g in his basement wall, it looked pretty nice until he stopped taking care of it
