I went driftwood hunting today and found some awesome peices (beats paying $45 a pop at the LFS!) but they are all too big to boil.

Is it safe to bake them in the oven to kill and parasites or other nasty critters?

Yeah, that should be fine.

Here is a great article on treating driftwood.

Wow you guys are quick! Thanks!

IS there anything special that should be done, Shinigami? I don't want to start a fire by throwing wood into a hot oven.

That article suggest spraying with a bleach solution. That's not a bad idea either, thanks!

Devon7,

His piece is too big too boil. Whether it'd take too much water or he can't find a big enough container.

Anyhow, baking firewood might have fire hazards, I'm not quite sure. Just makes sure you don't leave it in there too long without having a look at it.

I boiled what I could and sprayed the rest with a mix of bleach and water. Two peices aren't waterlogged yet so one keeps trying to float. The biggest piece is a stump type thing thats sitting just fine. It's got some awesome grooves to stick some anubias in.

I'm much happier with this then LFS wood...

I baked mine, errr only drawback is that it will make your house smell a bit but boiling will also do that....I used a large turkey tray full of water and did it in the oven @250F for a few hours....just keep an eye on it so it doesn't burn. After baking it'll need to be resunk, as well as have the tannins removed.

Babelfish,

You can also sink the wood into a 30 gallon water maid garbage can for a couple of weeks to waterlog it and to bleed some of the tannins away.
