It seemed very peaceful, and entertaining, and it did alot of work cleaning glass and items in the tank, and plants. Believe me, I liked that fish. I had 24 inches of fish fully stocked.. Now it's 19. According to the inch per gallon, and the cubic inch stocking guidelines the tank was ok. But pretty darn close to overstocked. Nitrates between 10 and 15. I learned my lesson and still payin while worryin about my gourami. She has a large raised bump on her head and there's damage to some of her scales on top there and red marks and small amount of fungus in the areas where attacked. She kinda hovers back and forth and wont eat. I am using full dose Melafix, and 1/3 dose fungus med for 2 days now and the light is off. The Amazon Nut... |

Someone touched on a good point, the CAE was simply an accessory fish to me, it not only stopped being useful, but killed some of my fish.. I would not go out of my way to make it a cozy new home, even if I had the room, which I don't. And I do believe once a fish has taken to sucking the slime coats off other fish, throwing it in another larger tank would not solve the problem. I could have thrown it in my oscar tank alive, but then it may have killed the one scarlet krib I have left.. NO WAY. Ask any oscar owner what they do with unwanted fish, and don't be so shocked when they say it gets fed to their oscar. If there was any other alternative, I would have persued that avenue, this was a last resort. As far as I'm concerned, this subject is closed. Oh yeah, I'm writing from my mom's computer as I went North for a few days.. Bought a larger tank to replace my 29 gal, at a lawn sale I passed on the way here... I think rough measurements are 36L x 12W x 17 or 18H is that a 35 gal long ? There goes the remaining counter space in the kitchen ! Tomorrow I go home to check up on my gourami. I was going to stay 2 more days but too worried about her. Once I get to the tank changeover, it's getting 3 inches of flourite put in, and no CAE's ( I typed CIA in former posts, its a common typo for me, those have been corrected, thanks ) The Amazon Nut... |

CAE's are, to an extent, similar to Tiger Barbs. People like your uncle and garyroland have few problems because they have a number of CAE's. However, without enough they may go after other CAE's. Of course, unfortunately, more CAE's does come with a cost of more tank space. IMO, more trouble than that species is worth. I personally wouldn't touch them with a ten-foot pole, but that is just me. I dont think anyone was picking on him, i just had no idea what was going on because everyone kept reffering to a CIA instead of a CAE. |
seedkiros![]() Mega Fish Posts: 974 Kudos: 270 Votes: 8 Registered: 07-Mar-2003 ![]() | Althought I agree with everyone when it comes to the tank being to small and lack of space, I do think that if Fishman learned his lesson, then we should just cut him a bit of slack. Logically, what makes a CAE anymore important than say a feeder fish? This is what I think, and that is why I don't feed live fish to other fish (not that I feed all sorts of fish to my other fish). |

I think everyone should give fishman a break. We all enjoy our fish and try to make the best decisions for their well-being. However, if one fish is bringing about the destruction of the entire tank, the fish has to go. As for the option of putting the fish in another tank, fishman would need to have a decent-sized tank and to add more CAE's. Personally, I wouldn't get an entire setup to please one "accessory fish." Besides, if he were to put it in a 10g tank, you all would probably flame him for that too. Remember: We all make mistakes WITH or WITHOUT prior warning. And as far as picking on him for the using the incorrect acronym (CIA instead of CAE), come on...Why be so childish? Fishman good luck with your gold gourami. I hope it pulls through. And that's my two cents!! P.S. This is my GF's account. The opinions expressed here are strictly my own. Later, Terry |

I was thinking and thinking over and over as to what a CIA could be lol, but CAE makes sense! |

mindbent![]() Hobbyist Posts: 99 Kudos: 42 Votes: 0 Registered: 27-Feb-2004 ![]() | I personally would not have put a fish that can reach 6 inches in length in a 29 gal. tank, way to small. I to have a fish problem. I have 1 whitecloud with an eye problem which I keep with a guppy that I have had since a fry and 1 danio I got as a feeder fish to start cycling my new tank. I don't have it in me to just flush them so I am going to give them to my LFS which will probably use them as feeders. I don't see the differance in what you did as to what I'm going to do. I do agree, that name calling and insults are not needed.Everyone has opinions and just because it is not the same doesn't make it wrong. |

Tiny Clanger - you keep saying my tank was an unsuitable environment, please explain to me why.. Stocking ? Does that fish require way more room than it had ? It appeared to have enough room, but I know (oscar) that some fish require more swimming room then the norm or more territory. The Amazon Nut... |

I don't agree with what you did, but i think if you learn ANYTHING out of this that it's to take (or at least consider) advice that's offered to you, and if you're still doubtful or unsure, ask for more opinions on the subject. ![]() |

He darts under and around the net, into caves where I can't catch him, the gourami is now fungused on the wounds so I have to try and catch CAE without adding additional stress to gourami.. So many darn plants for cover.. ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHH !! Tried 2 nets and blocking a cave with a 3rd net, no matter what I try, to no avail... He's getting a new name soon, no longer 'Jaws', but 'Oscar Treat a la Carte'. I just have to catch him ]:| [span class="edited"][Edited by DaFishMan 2004-08-17 16:08][/span] The Amazon Nut... |

(the MTS or LTS thread)That tank is overstocked if that list is still current. No wonder it got super aggressive. Fish will become aggressive when in a tank too small for their needs and territory requirements. So what I'm saying is that it probably would of been fine if you'd found it a home that met its requirements - ie a larger tank. Before you criticize someone walk a mile in their shoes. That way you're a mile away and you have their shoes. |

He's got a 4ft tank just for him and some mountain minnows, which are too small, fast, and high up in the tank for it to catch. There's a good home for every fish. Personally if the CAE had killed all your other fish, it was the 1 healthy fish you had left. I have been told by some people that when CAEs are large they can get along with African Cichlids too. <Vet in Training> Blog under development: http://www.nearlydrferox.blogging4life.com/ |

I wasn't happy about it either.. Know all the facts before you judge. First, my stepdad has 5 CAE's which he raised since they were small. He never had a problem with them, and he's had them over 5 years easy. They're about 6 inches long (huge). He keeps them with gouramis and angels. So I did not expect problems even though I was warned by 2 members (for all I knew, could have been isolated incidences). Mine was doing great until he suddenly turned violent. You should see the condition my gourami is in.. You can see she was attacked repeatedly, then I knew how the clown loach died. ETHICS ? It would be completely wrong to give a problematic fish to someone else, or to a fish store for some sucker to buy it just to have the same problem. (and if it attacks it's tankmates at the LFS, that will ruin any good faith you have with them) I can't believe you think that. Once a fish turns aggressive and attacks other fish, you either put it in it's own tank (no room, 3 tanks, small apartment) or put it down. Even a dog with the best upbringing, love and care can get distemper just like that and bite it's owners. You dont' sell it, you don't give it away or pawn it on a friend. You know what has to be done, and you don't like it either. No-one I know around here has room for any more fish. I would not push my problem onto someone else for them to deal with then have their fish get attacked. Is that really how you would handle it ? The fish have lots of room, and hiding spots etc.. I didn't share my problem with you to be name called, I make mistakes like everyone else, but try to learn from them. I explained my situation in more detail to you out of respect. Thanks for listening. ps - lunker101, a CAE is a Chinese Algae Eater.
