I disagree with cory addict. Fish who sleep at night and aren't 100% attentive will get caught.

Red-claw crabs truly do best in a light-brackish species paludarium.

That being said, you should have done the sensible thing- kept the crab and eaten the Corydoras.

When I had a crayfish he used to eat the fish, healthy or not. That only happened a couple of times til he made it into the gumbo (j/k). I think crustaceans are opportunists, and this red claw was easily the size of the cory - male with pretty big pincers.
One morning we awoke to find that the crafish was missing from our 10g in our kitchen. Luckily, though somewhat disarmingly, we found him stuck in the sink. Thank god we didn't have a garbage disposal!

Like I said, it is only in my experience that red claws have the capability to chew up other fish, I may quite possibly be wrong, but crustaceans aren't my specialty.

I can't really say for red claws, but I've never had problems with fiddlers and smaller fish. Then again, reddies seem to be quite a bit stonger in the pincer department, as they are often fed with ghost shrimp and snails at the store, so I'm not so sure...

Small tetras sleep near the gravel at night and my crabs don't catch them...

Unfortunately, I finished off the stocking on my tank. Tis the christmas season after all. I think I may be down 1 corydora
While enjoying the moonlight LEDs I got, I saw the shadow of something with 8 legs, but too big to be my Red Claw Crab. Of course it was too big, because it was hauling one of the new Corydora that I just got!!!
While I successfully scared the crap out of the crab, thereby making it drop the cory, I'm not sure how that little guy will do.
As for the crab . . . shellfish anyone? J/K - I don't know what to do? Anyone have suggestions? Do I have little choice but to get rid of my little crab?

I agree with corry addict. Crabs are fairly slow and should not be able to catch a 100% healthy fish. I would get the crab its own tank if you want to keep it or just give it back to the lfs.

cory addict is correct- red claws do not have the speed nor the claw size to harm healthy fish. i would suspect your cory was failing in health.

Crabs are weak and relatively slow moving. I bet you anything that the cory was already sick or weakened and the crab was merely taking advantage of the situation.

I have never heard of crabs killing healthy fish, except for livebearers because they are extremely stupid and easy to catch. I keep my crabs with corys and have never had any problems.

The crab is gone as i'd mentioned, it was one of the few memorabilia i had of my ex-fiancee - so it was hard.
Harder for me than my mother, who said I should flush the crab, not unlike the feeling she had for my ex-fiancee. The better got me of course, though, and I dropped him at my LFS.
MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR

I personally think you have two choices
1 keep the crab and suffer the results
2 get rid of the crab.

Sorry that is the only sensible answer I can think of.

I find it very unlikely thet this will be an isolated incident. If you have relitively easy prey...like placid cories acvailable, your crab will do what crabs do...eat anything it can sink its claws into.
