I have seen these recently in my LFS for about $9.50 US for 2. I have heard that these fish are hard to breed due to the fact that the manipulation of their genes to make the colors cause them to be born infertile.

Does anyone know if this is true? has anyone here bred them?

I would like to get some to breed as buying as a large shoal of these would look nice, but would be expensive.

Danio choprai is not manipulated in any way, the colors of this fish are natural. Breeding was described recently in an article published in TFH this year. You can probably retrieve the article online as they have an extensive archive.

Glofish are just transgenic zebra danios. D. choprai is closely related, but it is indeed a different species.

The fish at the LFS may be glowfish- their colors seem way to vivid to be normal. How can one tell for sure?

Danio choprai is closely related to Danio rerio, the common zebra fish which is used as a model organism in genetic studies. There is NO genetic variation of D. choprai available - the fish is in fact not so easy to breed and more challenging than D. rerio to keep. If you are talking about a fish that 'glows in the dark', you are looking for this:
http://www.fishmartinc.com/glofish.htm

If you are interested in breeding the glowfish: it is not more difficult to breed than the 'natural' zebra fish. The genetic 'manipulation' does not affect the eggs of the fish.

Thank you all

That answers my question. My LFS has glofish not D Choprai. Kind of expensive at $9.44 US for 2- is this the average price for them?

Glofish are pricey because they're patented... one company controls the supply, nobody else is allowed to sell them to your LFS, and they crank up the prices because they control the market.
