Danio choprai ?? | |
BM Fish Master Posts: 1436 Kudos: 239 Votes: 127 Registered: 24-Aug-2000 | I have seen these recently in my LFS for about $9.50 US for 2. I have heard that these fish are hard to breed due to the fact that the manipulation of their genes to make the colors cause them to be born infertile. Does anyone know if this is true? has anyone here bred them? I would like to get some to breed as buying as a large shoal of these would look nice, but would be expensive. http://www.fishprofiles.com/site/aquarank.aspx |

Breeding was described recently in an article published in TFH this year. You can probably retrieve the article online as they have an extensive archive. |

catdancer Big Fish Mad Scientist Posts: 471 Kudos: 138 Votes: 13 Registered: 15-Apr-2007 | Danio choprai is closely related to Danio rerio, the common zebra fish which is used as a model organism in genetic studies. There is NO genetic variation of D. choprai available - the fish is in fact not so easy to breed and more challenging than D. rerio to keep. If you are talking about a fish that 'glows in the dark', you are looking for this: http://www.fishmartinc.com/glofish.htm If you are interested in breeding the glowfish: it is not more difficult to breed than the 'natural' zebra fish. The genetic 'manipulation' does not affect the eggs of the fish. |
