discus are extremely nit picky fish. they are e to parasite infestation, and are extremely sensitive. for you i would recommend you go with some pretty africans... yellow labs and electric blues are very pretty...!!!

it is up to you... if you do disus you will need lots of plants and decorations. if yo do aficans you would be ok with just large rocks and maybe some anubias...

but if you are looking for a challenge then for all means go for discus, but heavily research them and establish the aquascape and etc before you purchase them...

also discus are extremly expensive and they arent as common as many african cichlids. IMO discus are beautiful, but they are alot of trouble. many people buy discus from a reliable breeder and they still die due to parasitical infestation and or the fact that they are so sensitive and are e to shock.

if you do get discus you will also need a good QT tank and also you would want to put some cardinal tetras or something in there... so for a 55g i would say 3-4 discus, and 10 cardinal tetras (stay away from neons are their potential to host Neon tetras disease could infest your discus and kill them all!)

if money isnt an issue then i would go for discus... the tank and setup will run you probably a thousand (live plants, rocks, driftwood, and the fish temselves...)...
although that might be a bit of an exaggeration...
