I have had a couple neon tetras, and a cardinal vanish. My small pleco is also not anywhere. I have a peaceful mixed community, so I know none of the others would have eaten them. I have noticed the ammonia is a bit high, so I have been doing nightly 10% water changes---what besides tearing the tank apart and doing deep vaccuuming should I do, or just leave it be?

Perhaps the ammonia spike is dead bodies you haven't found? I would be delicately having a look for them.

The fish have possibly died because of the ammonia and have just wasted away. This might have even caused the ammonia to rise as well.
Keep doing the vacs but I would change about 25% of the water every 2nd or 3rd day, also add some Melafix to help destress the fish.

Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info

Check your filter. I once had a filter that sucked up some of my smaller fish when the end cap came off. Dead fish stuck inside the filter could be causing your ammonia spike as well. Look in your plants and decorations - surprising where fish can get stuck...

Even though you have peaceful fish, that won't stop them from picking apart a body. Fish can be pretty quick with that, actually, so your fish may have died and then the other fish went in to eat the body.
