I got home today and my best mate and his misus came over for a quick chat, as we were chatting in my room he noter that the stand on which my tank was resting was leaning well forward (about 10cm). anyway i craped myself and got a couple of peices of wood to prop it up. i hear an almighty cracing noise at which stage i soil myself again and promptly proceed to phone my dad who upon arival intructs me to remove the fish, all rocks and the water!

anyway i put the fish into my other tanks and move the canister filter to my now well overstocked 3footer.

the whole time dad (who like me is a civil engineer) was complaining   kind of an engineer are you putting a 300kg tank on a stand made out of pine 1*3's. (i want it noted that it was in fact my mate who orgaized the setting up of the tank as a suprise bday present, hes an economist and would have no idea about the structural integrity of an aquarium stand.)

tommorow im going to buy a new cabinet style sturdy stand.

i have the following questions,

given that overnight the bacteria in the UGF will die and all the mulum will go off ill need to clean out the gravel? right?

thats not so bad i guess coz ive still got the canister running on the other tank which should limit this to a mini cycle right?

the next thing is that ive put 6 of the fish in a 2ft tall which has only been running a week and a half (though with some gravel from established tanks) i should have the 4footer set up by tomorow afternoon will they be ok till then?

lastly does anyone know where i can get good quality well priced cabinets in melbourne? any idea on a price? keep in mind ill need it immediately.

Yea, you'll want to clean the gravel out and give it a wash (no soap, of course). The bacteria will start to die off in masses after about an hour without fresh waterflow and food.

Yes, if the canister filter has been set up and running on an established tank for at least two weeks (more preferred) you should not be experiencing a full out cycle. As always, keep a close eye on your water parameters with a reputable test kit to be sure.

If you are going to get the other fish out of the overstocked tank, you should be ok, but keep testing and be ready to do a water change if need be.

Good luck!!

Did you say the tank cracked, or was it just the stand? Have you filled the tank with water again to see that it is still sound? I'd be concerned that if the stand shifted, the integrity of the seams might be compromised.

Call Regency Aquarium, they are in Croydon.
Mentone Aquarium would be my second choice if I desperately needed a tank or stand.

Good luck!

was the original stand held together by nail brads by any chance?

I've had one go over like that, thankfully the tank ended up resting on the wall behind. 4 coachbolts and 2 diagonal struts and it has been rescued, but that is the last time I ever buy a stand from an aquarium shop.

nah it was just shonky, most stands i've seen are held together with some reasonably heavy duty nails/screws and made with 2*4 sections. this one was just held together shallowly with some dicey looking screws and made out of 1*3

i bought it from a dicey wholesaler "friend" (now former) his stuff aint that good.

African_man you are cracking me up there!!!! The economist, dare I say, may have made the decision based upon budgetary constraints!

Calla, you are making me worry. Another thing to keep me away at night! Did you notice anything suspect about my tank stand last time you saw it?

No, yours looked far better than mine, and was upright Both of mine had not a single screw in sight, and the 3' was somewhat precariously balanced on the uprights only, with the other stuff just for show!
