I've never heard of this brand of food. What fish do you have and what are you feeding them now? A good variety in their diet will do just as good a job (if not better) as any "color enhancing" food.

It is one of those hormone induced food designed mainly for Malawi/Tanganyika Cichlids and Discus.... as you know most Malawi's male are much more colourful than females... and every fish born as a female and some will turn into male when growing older. Those food stimulate the male hormones within the fish so that it brings the colour out, by "making" the fish male.

The problem with these food is that it will make fish all males..(hence no females for proper breeding) and those fish will have a much less chance and success in breeding with another proper female. It also tend to increase the fish agression as well.

So, becareful how you use them.

Are you saying that fish are born female Week End? I just want to understand what your saying because i've never heard that theory before.... ever. Can you give us some links to information backing this theory of yours up?

I heard something about there being a good deal of hormones in those largely popular colour enhancing foods.

What fish have most colour? Males for the most part...
So i a way i can understand, but my brain keeps kicking me. There is a memory there about oestrogens, but i can't place it...

I know the food you are talking about, and i have heard the same things about it being laden with hormones, but to be honest, i've never picked up a jar and read it...

Anyone got a SUPER G label?

For animals, the entire universe has been neatly divided into things to (a) mate with, (b) eat, (c) run away from, and (d) rocks. - Terry Pratchett

It has a big "G" in the front label of the can. And the ones I have seen says "For Cichlid" and "For Discus" with a pic of the fish on the package as well.

And I learn that "theory" about fish start off as females from a well experienced aquarist. So I don't actually have any sites which explain this concept....

But what's the main fact that I wanted to bring out is that for "Malawi" cichlids, the all new born fish start off with female colours, and as they grow older..a "male" fish will change to a more attractive colour (usually better than the females) while females remains the same colour as they were when they are juveniles. And the aggression of males will also show up. So before a colour change occur, all of them has the look of females and less agressions unlike the males. Hence....it is "logical" to "speak" that...all Malawi's start off as females and in the future some may turn male.

What those Super G does is it stimulate the male hormones when the fish is still at juvenile or already a grown female to make the male characteristics to come out..such as colours and aggression.

So..honestly and be exact...I don't have any proof to support "fishes start off as females" even for Malawi's

This does not happen femles dont became males.
These foods contain male hormones that will cause males to be brighter and females to look like males. The females dont become males. If you have good quality fish, you will never need this food.

Protogyny (starting off as female and going to male) is pretty much restricted to Wrasses, Parrotfish, Groupers, and some related fish. There are very few protogynous freshwater fish; the first one discovered is a cichlid, however it's a South American species. Some Malawi Cichlids, however, exhibit protandry, where the males go to females, if there is damage to the male organs.

So kudos to bringing science into the topic, but unfortunately the hypothesis is incorrect.

Hormones, like with humans, make fish turn into loose cannons, ya know, say something wrong or look at them funny and they try to kill you. It would be a good idea to stop feeding that.

If you were raising fish to sell and feeding them this, I think it would be wrong. Using hormone enhanced food to brighten or bring out a fish's color, when it will be going back to normal if the food is not being fed anymore, is false advertising, in my opinion.

If feeding only to fish you are keeping... I still think it's a silly idea.
