K so i was out at the LFS yesterday looking around at filters when i saw one that had the heater inside the filter. Now i've heard of these but i have never seen one. and it got me wondering what exactly is the benefit of having it inside the filter? thanks

The main benefit is your tank has one less piece of unnatural-looking equipment in it. But it's also great for stingrays and large nocturnal fish that might take a nap under a heater and get burned otherwise.

It also helps keep the heat distribuation even throughout the tank, you don't get pockets of warmer water closer to the heater.

For an LFS, it'd also mean one less thing for fish to hide behind when workers are trying to net and bag them

I use inline heaters in my tanks, the plus are looks and even heating of the water.... Being in a SW tank area, (LSF stores have all told me they are mainly going SW because they sell more and not tomany people are into FW tanks here) I see alot of wet/dry system that have the sub. heaters in the wet/dry basin, so this is nothing new. However I seen the Rena has made a heater that you attach to the suction side of the your filter, the only problem I see with these is you sre heating unfilter water, I see problems with them as waste and and things will come in contact with the heating membraine causing breakdown.

When I bought my Eheim Pro11 there was a heater model but was told to run a mile from them as the heaters can go faulty like all heaters and not worth the extra money.
What I have done is have my heaters very close to the inlet and spray bay and by doing this I have a very even temperature throughout the 5ft tank.

Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info

Keith, I'm using the Hydor inline units, they are working quite will and the only diffence in break down is I have to by a new heater if it break, just like a sub. heater. These are seprate units form the canister filter on the discharge side. More space and you don't have to worry about the fish breaking it, or rocks or bumping it. I know that all my water is heated evenly, except the natural diffence cause by the lights and depths of the tank. they come in 200 (1/2" or 5/8" barbs) and 300 (5/8" barb only) watts, very easy to read and set temp controls, and accurate. The clean look the tank, is worth the cost, as they are a bit on the pricey side when it comes to heaters.

That sounds like a good idea also when you are do your water changes you dont have to turn the heaters off. I have forgotten several times over the years to turn them back on. I do not know this heater but I would always have a spare heater on hand just in case.

You got to have a constant water flow and it has a built in sensor that if it get to hot it turns off until it cools down..... I never had one break down. I have several back ups.... just in case.....but that just smart fish keeping
