Ok well i'm moving into my uni dorm on sept 16th and obviously I have to leave my 4' tank behind

I was thinking of taking a small tank (max 24'*12'*whatever high) and probably keeping it as a sepcies tank.

Now i get to stay in my dorm through the inter term holidays (christmas, easter etc) so the tank would only need to be moved home twice a year(once back home and then again when i start again)

Any ideas of interesting species to keep that wouldn't mind the travelling (it's only 40-50 miles away from home at the moment so the actual traveling time would only be about 45 mins at max)

Possibly some shellies or puffers?

I vote for shellies. Most African Cichlids are tough and can travel well. 45 minutes is not a really long time either. Just make sure you minimize the cycling of your tank.

Most fish travel well if you plan well. Since I am from the states, I assume that you will be driving a car or have the use of one.

If you have aggressive cichlids you may want to individually bag the fish, if not a standard 5 gallon plastic bucket or two will work. Do not feed the fish for two days before you move them. It will minimize ammonia from excrement. Use Prime or a similar ammonia detoxifier as a preventive treatment in your container.

You may want to have started your "school" filter in your existing tank for a week or two to seed the material. Keep the fish stocking light in your school tank.

If your holidays are less than two weeks, you shouldn't have to worry about the fish.

I get 2 holidays, they last 4 weeks but like i said i can get into my dorm during these holidays and will probably spend at least 2 weeks of the holidays in uni (high workload and all that )

I think i'll get the tank and everything while i'm at uni just to save problems with transporting it up while i'm there.

And yes we will be travelling in a car (or possibly van depending on how much stuff i take)

Edit: In fact, there is the filter media in my big tanks filter from the filter i used on my old 24*12' (it cracked when i tried setting it up as a fry tank for the angels ), i still have the actual filter, and the hood/lighting and the heater so I think i will deffo get a 24*12
