Hello

In my tank I have some guppys, harleys, platys, mollie, sterbai & bolivian ram. I have some mollie & platy fry in a little breeding compartment.

How big do they need to be before the above listed fish would not eat them?

Thanks,

Cheers

I would keep them seperate until they are large enought that they will not fit in the other fishes mouths. With your fish, I would say about an half an inch or larger - to be on the safe side. I an not sure however, what a sterbai is (not familiar with that one).

I was just told, like what Two Tanks said, when they are big enough to not fit into the mouths of the other fish.

That's just it, how big do they have to be before they don't fit into a ram's mouth. Going lengthwise, this could be a while, cause the fry are skinny & maybe my rams or my greedy mollie could suck them in lengthwise.

I guess it's a case of asking how long, is long?

Unfortunately there isn't a definite answer. If you want to raise the fry I'd keep them out of the tank as long as possible. Do you have another tank you could move them to from the breeding compartment?

Dont risk it too soon, mollies have quite large mouths, and rams can get territorial. The sexual behaviour of the fish should also be taken into account, as sometimes harrassment can occur. Id wait until they were at least a quarter of their full adult length, that way they will be more likely to survive the abuse and not get damaged or eaten. You probably wont have to wait long, they should grow quickly.

Thanks Therese & longhairedgit.

Unfortunately no. My small tank, which I could have used, is currently being used as a hospital for some sick sterbai & all the other tanks have fishies that could snack on them. So I still have them in the breeding nets.
