For the last 2 weeks I've been treating my QT for whitespot, which has meant lights off & very murky water. Today, at the end of treatment I did a 50% water change & to my surprise, I have babies in the tank - don't know what they are (my daughter thinks they're mollies). I have put them in a hang on breeding tank inside the QT. It is one that is held in place with suction caps at the top of the tank. This would mean, if I turn my lights on, they will be just above the fry.

Can anyone tell me if the lights, being that close, would hurt the fry. At the moment, I'll leave the lights off, but can anyone tell me if it's ok to turn the lights back on.

Thank you

Cheers

The light will not harm them, though it might take them some to time get used to the sudden changes in brightness.

What adults did you keep in this tank before?

If there's a cover glass over the aquarium, you could always shade the breeding container with the fry in by putting some cardboard over the relevant area if you wish. If there's space, pop in a small sprig of Hornwort too, and possibly a small climp of Java Moss. That should give your fry some added security and environmental stimulation.

It wouldn't hurt them much, but i would move them to another place in the tank, where it's not that bright.

Thanks for the replies. They are just forward of the light, so I think it will be ok after all. In the tank were 2 bolivian rams, 3 rasboras 1 male guppy & what was supposed to be a male mollie.

The tank was so murky with the meds, that they fry couldn't be seen. The more I look at the shape of the fry, the more I think my new mollie must have been a pregnant female instead of the male I'd asked for.

I haven't seen any hornwort in LFS near me, but I'll put some java moss in.

How do I feed the fry? I've been crushing flakes really fine & they seem to be eating that.

thanks,

Cheers

Yes, crushed Flakes should be fine for the Livebearers.

I make up a mix of regular flake, spirulina, and freeze-dried blood worms. Crush that into a fine powder and feed it to my fry with a toothpick.

Hi Theresa,

How does the toothpick work. Do you use it as a sort of "dip stick" to get the food in their water, or do you mean that they come & eat off the toothpick?

Cheers

You moisten the toothpick and just enough food clings to it to be dispensed into the small enclosure where your fry are ... means you're less likely to overfeed

Moisten, dip into food, then dip into enclosure with fry. Simple.
