I was out of town this weekend and came back to a broken furnace. 75gal was 48F and my 29 was 41F. I have goldfish and native lake fish. They all survived and tanks are back up to 70F now. I don't think the mystery snails made it though.

Hi,
Sorry to hear about the furnace. Ours went bonkers too
but I simply had to reset it. That is one advantage
of keeping native fish, they can handle the lower temps
far better than the tropicals!

Native fish are fish that are native to your country. It just happens that most of us live in more temperate zones rather than tropical ones, so our native fish can handle lower temps than the native fish of someone in Brazil.

Largemouth bass, bluegill and a Channel cat. (I know how big these fish get)

The snails are out and about tonight

It is actually surprising though how warm the water will stay in a lake. It can be completely frozen over on the surface but 50F near the bottom as the earth heats the water. It's likely that my fish have never seen water that cold before.

No heaters. These fish prefer 65F so I keep them at room temp.

Looks like furnace is fixed (after 2nd service call) and I did routine maintenance on my tanks today. I decided to test ammonia and nitrite for possible bacteria loss due to cold temps a week ago. Ammonia was .75 in my 29 and Nitrite was .5 in my 75. All other params are normal. Looks like I am going through a mini-cycle with both tanks. It seems odd that the 29 is showing ammonia and the 75 isn't but it was nearly 10F colder than the 75 when I got home. It could have been even colder while I was gone. On a positive note, all my critters are still doing well
