My sugestion is to have a good look at as many tanks as possible and the fish that are suitable for that tank size. Then work from that.

make people stare at it
Involves more than just fish, it is the total concept of a theme, fish & aquscaping.

Does the birthday present include all the necessary bits and pieces, heater, filter, light unit, or do you have this already?

get an eel
the emptyness of the tank attracts curiousity then when ppl take a closer look they see the eel n either freak out or become mezmorized

toss in a polypterus, also. The ornate ones are attractive if you ask me and they are suitable with an eel. I have a fire eel that looks pretty cool - more colorful than most. They'll both outgrow a 40 gallon eventually, but you'll have time. The eel grows really slowly. Not as sure about the polypterus, but I've had mine for 5 mos or so and haven't really seen much growth.

Depends which species...

Some grow much to large for a 30 and even a 40 gallon tank, while on the other hand you'd be able to put several pairs of the many Apistogramma species in a tank that size.

Do you want to plant the tank? Heavily planted tanks will keep people watching much longer than more sparsely decorated tanks.

I'm not your neighbor, you Bakersfield trash.

dont get fish if a friend likes them or a neighbour thinks it looks cool cause there thoughts towards your fish dont matter. it doesnt matter if your neighbour thinks your fish are ugly as long as you like themT

Get some angels or discus. You might want to add some rams or pearl gouramis
