Years and years ago, my brother got a grow-a-frog kit from our grandmother. We ordered a few tadpoles through the mail and raised a few frogs in what we know now to be horrible conditions. It didn't help that my brother didn't take good care of them.
Now that we are all older and wiser, my brother would really like to grow a few more frogs in an actual aquarium. I believe that these tadpoles you get through the mail are for African clawed frogs. I know they get pretty large, so he'd probably only raise 2 of them in a 10 gallon tank. Are there any fish that can be kept with these frogs to go in a tank this small with them? Are the frogs plant-friendly?

Hoping that there must be a word for everything I mean...

Yep, grow-a-frogs are african clawed frogs...

No, there aren't really any fish that can go with them in that small of a tank. They tend to eat ANYTHING that they can get in their mouth (food, rocks, decor, fish, plants, etc, etc), so any fish that's too big to fit in their mouth is generally too large to put in a 10 gal with 2 frogs (trust me on that one... I've tried...)...

If you wanted to put them in a bigger tank, you could put some of the more peaceful african cichlids with them. I'm not that big of an african cichlid person, but I'm guessing that peacocks or something would work? I know that you can put american cichlids with them, but they don't do quite as well, and it ain't a biotope then. I know people have kept severums and oscars and things with them w/out problems... dunno if the oscars were full grown or not, but I'm guessing they weren't, otherwise they'd probably eat the frogs...

No, they're not really plant friendly at all. They'll eat just about anything, including plants (tried it). If you've got a decent amount of light and some fast growing plants (hornwort, anacharis, duckweed, etc) that will grow faster than the frogs can eat them, then they'll do alright (and absorb some of the waste from them too!).

If you want to breed the frogs (not too hard to do, btw) you can just do a big waterchange with cold water and that will usually trigger a spawn (it has every freakin' time I've done a waterchange... the male will make so much noise with all of his croaking...). They do like to have plants to spawn in, and if they spawn in plants, it makes it easy to remove the eggs and raise the tadpoles in another tank--just grab the bunch of plants and toss it in the other tank

If you need anything else or have any other questions, let me know... I've kept these guys for years and bred 'em several times... done about everything you could ever think to do with them (including trying to keep them w/piranha). I recently sold them to a friend tho... I just didn't have any space for them anymore, and they made too much noise

HTH

Wow! Great info! Thanks so much. I'm sure I'll have more questions...

I was thinking that a 29 gallon tank and some lepard ctenopomas (probably 3) and perhaps even a butterfly fish and the two frogs might make for a nice african river biotope...

A butterfly fish would probably work alright... never thought of one of them. That would probably work alright. Just be sure you don't get 2 male frogs... they'll probably fight (and make lots of ribbit-ish noises). Either get 2 females or a male and a female (I'd go for the latter if you want more froggies )...

Have fun

An African Butterfly fish gets a little to big for a 10 gallon, they get up to 5" in length. I would maybe go with two dwarf gouramis.

Exactly. I said that there wasn't anything big enough to go with them that'd fit in a 10... but an ABF will fit in a 29 w/them

Oh i'm sorry well in that case an ABF would be best kind in that tank.

I have a dwarf gourami and a fairly large male platy in my 10 gallon tank with Kermit, my ACF, and neither fish has disappeared yet. He did make fast work of some platy fry and a crayfish. I believe Kermit to be full grown as he is about 5 inches across (males are smaller than females). He just seems to be used to those two fish and he leaves them alone. Just another .02 worth.

Here's a pic of Kermit:
