Well, here's a guy who built an aquarium specifically to keep such big fishes ... it's almost as big as his living room. Yes, you read that correctly ... This aquarium is, wait for it, twelve feet long by twelve feet wide by seven feet deep. Yes, it's a pond in his ba The inmates include Freshwater Stingrays the size of dustbin lids, Pacus that are 2 feet long and still growing, big Pangasius catfishes that aren't lacking for space, and his smallest fish is a fully grown adult Giant Gourami. So, next time someone asks what they need to keep Pacus, point them at this article and say "build an aquarium like that". (Link subject to the irksome intermittent "?" in URL bug by the way) |

I would not want to even think about the cost of the utilities (water, electric, heat) much less the humidity mitigation that they have to do to maintain that tank, and home. Just a couple of other observations... Is it me, or is he the only one smiling in the picture? Where are the kids, or is the tank and fish their "children." I like the bit where it describes how entry to the tank is through a piece of open floor by the bay window, and what a surprise a burglar would get climbing through there and falling in. I dread to think what his utilities bills are too. Love to be able to afford to do it myself, but I'd have to earn a LOT of money to emulate that setup. |

They both do some enormous tanks for rescuing turtles. If I had a tank that big id have to plant it, maybe more work, but it could be spectacular. Might save a bit on filtration too, I suppose the pacu might eat a lot of it though. Seen people keep some huge water lillies with them. |

I think I asked the same question but of course, I can't remember. it's amazing that people can spend the money on that! I would love to just have a couple different tanks, and keep changing what kind of fish are kept in them . . . I think that tank would be TOO much in my house and I would just go work at the aquarium. haha "it's the neck, it creaks under the weight of too much heavy thinking." |

longhairedgit Fish Guru Lord of the Beasts Posts: 2502 Kudos: 1778 Votes: 29 Registered: 21-Aug-2005 | I wish I had the money to try out a closed ecosystem. Technically you could have a tank so large that it would never need water changes, if it was planted with reeds, loads of roiling surfaces, gravel beds , loads of plants etc. I wonder what size of tank you need before that becomes feasable? Maybe 50,000 gallons? |

monkeyboy Fish Addict Posts: 521 Kudos: 375 Votes: 223 Registered: 10-Apr-2005 | rjmcbean, i think once the tanks get that big, your best off just building the monster tank and opening it up to the public for showing and charge a small fee Fish tanks are an expensive addiction |

The floor above him is absorbing the water. I guess he should have put a water vapor barrier in the roof. Calilasseia *Ultimate Fish Guru* Panda Funster Posts: 5496 Kudos: 2828 Votes: 731 Registered: 10-Feb-2003 | If that was me building a tank like that, I'd dig a separate bunker for it, so that it was isolated from the house. Then it wouldn't matter about water damage to the house because it would be in its own building, which I'd make sure was properly constructed to withstand the humidity. Yes, I'd think about charging visitor admission as well. |
