Here's the deal---once neons grow larger than about, oh, 1.5", most angels won't touch them. As stated, neon fry are the natural prey of angels, not to mention the fry of many different species of fish. However, most of our aquarium bred strains of angels are of southern amazonian descent---where they will never come into contact with the Peruvian neons. Therefore, IMO, the "natural tendencies" of the angels shouldn't really be put into consideration. As far as personal experiences go, I've never had a problem with the two. If you're really that concerned, I would go for the smaller quarter sized angels which are now commonly available on the market, being incapable of feeding on the neons at this point, they should coexist peacefully together, even when the angels are full grown.

My two medium sized angels ate all 10 of my neons in 1 night..... And since then i have also heard that they are the natural food source of angels in the wild.

someone mentioned that you should add an angel fish into the mix. Maybe I was told incorrectly, but i heard that neons are the natural prey of angels, so I wouldn't get there I were you.

Aiite, so let's clear up what the stocking list is going to be. I'd do something like this:

6 cories
1 or 2 pearl gouramis (centerpiece)
15 tetras (1 kind. A big school is gorgeous!)
2 blue rams (While they're beautiful, they aren't much of a centerpiece since they are small and stay near the bottome)
3 guppies or platies

With guppies or platies, either get 1 male/2 females, or get all females. I've had problems with males fighting with each other when they are alone. It probably had something to do with how they kept on trying to mate with each other.

They shade the glow of it with their mossy-misty costumes,
They wear masks of silk, porcelain, brass, and silver,
So as not to mislead with their own, ordinary faces.

Thanks all for the advice, and Bensaf there seems to be a very good selection around Dublin at the moment, Whackers on parnell street have the whole basement full, and there is a shop on capel street, (not quite as good though), there doesnt seem to be a great selection of large fish, but plenty of choice. (well for me anyway)

Think I will keep an eye out for a pair of Rams.

Would there be any problem with adding a copule of guppies, or palties

Finally got the tank filled, and everything is functioning well

Regards

Hi Stephen,

Welcome. A fellow Irishman, we've just doubled the charm quota on FP

Second what the other are saying, 3 schools may be a bit much traffic wise. Some centrepiece fish would be great, a pair of rams, or a pair of Dwarf Gourami's, a single large gourami like a blue would be good too.

What's the fish selection like in Ireland these days? I only remember Paddies Pet Shop in Parnell St. Dublin as stocking tropicals as a kid !!

Hello all

Just need a little advice, I am a complete nivice to fish keeping, and have a new 40gl tank. I am looking at adding the following and would like to hear any opinions you might have

6 corys (bronze or peppered or dwarf)
8 zebra danio
10-15 (neon or similar) tetras
6 black widows

Does this sound too much or have i some spare capacity. The tank will have live plants, driftwood etc.

Any comments would be appreciated

Thank you all for your advice, sorry I havent replied earlier as the forum went down about an hour after i posted my message.

I have only set the tank up last night (waiting for stand) and have not even added the water yet.

BSCAL
First off, since you are new to all this, have you read about how to cycle a tank when you first get it? There are several good articles for new fishkeepers in the articles section that you might want to read.

I have read any articles i can find and nave a few excellent books, so I think I should be ok with cycling 'well hopefully anyway'

With regards to stocking I have decided the following

Corys (peppered, bronze or bandit)
Glowlight tetras
Zebra Danio

I think then all I need is a showpiece fish, as Cup_of_Lifenoodles & sirbooks have suggested. Possibly a pair of rams? or a pair of gourami's? Dont want to go with angels at the moment. (next project for the missus as she loves them)

Thanks again for your replies, and will keep you all posted on my progress if anyone is interested.

Cheers

Welcome to fishprofiles and to the fish keeping hobby!
First off, since you are new to all this, have you read about how to cycle a tank when you first get it? There are several good articles for new fishkeepers in the articles section that you might want to read.

Now, about your stocking list, cories are awesome. My favorites are the peppered cories because they are just so cute. The rest of your stocking list seems to sound really full for the size of your tank. You might want to pick one fish like the neon tetras and have that school and then cories. Then you could add something else later that did not need a school. Oh, the neons are just for example, my point was to pick one school.

Also, please add fish slowly to your tank after it is cycled so you won't have any problems with water quality. Good luck and I'll check back later if you have any more questions.

I'd go with eight of the tetras, six danios, and pick a large, eye catching fish. Otherwise, all you have are schools of fish. While they are fun to watch, they don't really draw as much attention towards your tank. An angelfish would be a good choice, or a cichlid. Just be careful that the 'display' fish won't eat the smaller fish in your tank.

I have heard that Cardinal tetras versus Neon tetras are better because the neon stripe on the cardinals goes the whole length of the fish, while the neon's does not. I guess in some areas there is a price difference though, so it depends on your preference.

There was a poll on here asking just that, cardinals vs neons, which was better. If you do a search on the forums you may find it.

Thats all I can comment on, as thats all the knowledge (or lack of) that I have

IMO, I'd drop the zebras for a larger showcase fish or a pleco/octet of ottos.
