Is it normal for Clown Loaches to suddenly become reclusive and hide in their cave alot? It does'nt seem normal to me. Needless to say I am concerned. Should I be or am I over reacting?

I am very far from being an expert on CLs but I have had them for close to 25 years. The ones I have now are all growing very well as previous photos have shown the oldest could easily be very close to 16+ yld

If it was a sudden move I would be looking at the tank extremely close.

Here are some things to look out for
Water parameters changes.
Water temps.
Filtration etc
Introduction of new fish
Water changes (importing from water supply)
What colour is the CL saying that me eldest is a lighter colour than the yonger ones?
Is there another CL taking over?
Look extremely for any concerns especially "White Spot"
Is there enough shelter in the tank liver plants, DW and more than one cave.
Is the tank big enough?
Are they on a good diet plenty of mixed foods?

Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info

Well I would say that the only one of your suggestions that would make sense right now is the introduction of new fish. I lost 3 Glo-light Tetras with the heater malfunction. About 5 days later after all had settled I re introduced 3 more Glo-lights. I guess that is the problem. I am going to keep a very close eye on water conditions and their behavior over the next week. Thanks for the info!

i have had clown loaches for a long time, and sometimes mine will become lethargic, etc, not eat.

it has only happened a few times, and i only have had one death from it (the death could have been from old age though, the clown was very old)

What's happening in the mid region of your tank?
*looks up*
If there's not much action above them they get suspicious and hide out.

But newbies in the tank is reason for caution for a loach too
